Pennsylvania Fishing Report: 11/9/07

Lake Erie: Snowmelt earlier this week created good runoff in the tributaries, and steelhead were on the move and progressing upstream, as of yesterday. Lake Erie Ultimate Angler suggests egg patterns as well as streamers in bright colors while flow is high; turn to softer colors as water becomes low and clear. Target riffles as well as pools. Fresh fish will be active, but older fish that have been in the streams for a while will probably be more lethargic in chilly water. That might be temporary because temperatures from seasonable to above average are forecast.

Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): Walleye fishing has been productive in the north portion of the lake around Willow Bay and Sugar Bay on crawler harnesses and jigs and crawlers. A few white bass and smallmouth bass also are reported. The tailrace of the dam is yielding walleyes after dark. In the river, anglers are catching brown and rainbow trout.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Sheakleyville Bridge is yielding nice bluegills and crappies in late afternoon and through evening.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Amid low fishing pressure, anglers are catching nice crappies, including some slabs close to 15 inches.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): Taylor Zarewicz, 12, caught a 20-inch smallmouth bass on a green pumpkin seed tube with a minnow.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Windy, cold weather shut down fishing midweek, although nice walleye catches were reported last weekend. Cliff Morgan of New Castle caught 24- and 26-inch walleyes Sunday vertically jugging Sonars in 15 feet. Most other catches are coming in 14 to 18 feet. A lot of perch, including jumbos, also are reported, mostly caught by shore anglers fishing minnows. The crappie bite has been dandy.

Oil Creek (Venango County): Snowmelt boosted water flow and trout are hitting streamers and small nymphs in both Delayed Harvest areas. For more, visit http://www.oilcreekoutfitters.com.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Kevin Whipkey of Butler released a 41-inch muskie Wednesday trolling a Legend perch bait. Cold weather has put a damper on fishing pressure. Anglers are targeting muskies and reporting good walleye catches and quality perch 8 to 12 inches. Crappies also are hitting.

Allegheny River: After-dark fishing for walleyes has been productive, with fish up to 28 inches being caught by the Highland Park Dam. Chris Donachy of Oakmont released several 21 to 30 inches on 3-inch stickbaits. Smaller saugers and smallmouth bass also are reported.

Ohio River: Bob Sefchick of Carrick landed a monster flathead (but lost his scale) Oct. 15 jigging a piece of ham in 25 feet at the Alcosan plant's warm water discharge.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Mike Kalufut of Uniontown released nine walleyes, 18 to 22 inches, jigging Rapalas in deep water over the weekend.

Youghiogheny River: Anglers are catching recently stocked trout.
