Delaware Bay fishing looks as though it is getting started.
Two 50-pound striped bass on the same boat and a 75-pound drumfish are a pretty good indication.

That is what happened over the past couple of days.

Jim Wallace at Jim's Bait and Tackle in Cape May said that at midday Tuesday, the striped bass action had not yet taken off. Later, he called to change that report.

That was after Tim Tanghare of Cape May took a charter on the Clean Sweep to Cross Ledge area and caught bass that weighed 52 and 50 pounds. Tanghare, who was fishing with Chuck Manning, also came back with 44- and 42-pounders, meaning four of the 10 they caught were more than 40 pounds. They released all but one.

On Wednesday, Wallace headed for Delaware Bay himself, turning the shop over to his able staff while he went fishing. Sometimes, it's good to be the boss.
The first big black drum came from Tussey Slough. It was caught Tuesday night by Tom Voustine of Philadelphia and weighed 75 pounds when measured at Capt. Tate's Tackle Box in Dennisville.

Voustine went back to the scene and had a 30-pounder in the boat Wednesday morning, reported Tim Hand at Capt. Tate's.

Bob Cope on the Full Ahead had six drum to 40 pounds for a charter of five from Trenton, also at Tussey, according to a report from Utsch's Marina in Cape May.

Steve Bent on the Free Spirit charterboat had five drum on Monday. Gary Mathis of Lower Township reported back to Budd's Bait and Tackle in Villas with four drum.

The Banana Peel, Pin Top, Punk Grounds and the Oyster Grounds are other Delaware Bay spots for drum. Anchor up with clam for bait.

The surprising upstream bluefish action continued on the Mullica River into Wednesday.

Capt. Howard's Bait and Tackle in Egg Harbor City weighed in another slammer. This one went 12 pounds and was caught by Benny Langford of Sicklerville on finger mullet.

A 10-pounder was caught Tuesday by Julian Langford, also of Sicklerville.

These blues are 10-12 miles up the Mullica off JR's Ranch between Lower Bank and Green Bank.

Weakfish are still scattered throughout the area, according to various reports.

They are back by the dike near Double Creek inside Barnegat Inlet, reports Nick Sabatini at Barnegat Light Bait and Tackle. Sabatini said drum are in there, too, and taking the Fin-S cast by the weakfishers.

Mike Hodges at Budd's said Don Brown of Villas got a 5.5-pound weakfish while floating bloodworms from a Cape May jetty.

Tom Ready beached a 36-pound, 45-inch striped bass Saturday at Brigantine. The catch earned Ready a bounty worth $1,400 from ACfishing.com for first bass of the season to measure more than 40 inches.

Andy Grossman at RipTide Bait and Tackle in Brigantine said striped-bass action in the Brigantine surf has picked up over the past two days.

Sea bass have started to show up in the inshore waters. Mike O'Neill, captain of the Stray Cat out of Seaview Harbor Marina, said his crew had sea bass and a codfish on Saturday. And Wednesday, the entire crew limited out on sea bass.
