Ledger-Enquirer

MARTIN

Water conditions: Down 15 1/2 feet; mid- to high 60s; clear. The few anglers who have been using the lake recently are still reporting excellent catches of spotted bass . Some say it's hard not to catch a spot if you find the right point on the main lake. Some anglers have reported catching as many as 40 to 50 spots per day. Fishermen are having success with everything from small Rat-L-Traps to Carolina-rigged finesse worms. Color doesn't seem to matter. Special note: With water level incredibly low, many ramps around the lake are unusable. The Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources extended the boat ramp at Pace's Point earlier this year to help low-water boaters launch their boats a little easier. The ramp is located on Tallapoosa County Road 34. Conservation officials say numerous areas have become hazardous due to the low water. Boaters are urged to use extreme caution.

WEST POINT

Water conditions: Down 12 1/2 feet; high 60s; clear. Lots of spotted bass are being caught around points on small crankbaits like Rat-L-Traps, silver sinking Rapalas and Shad-Raps. Trollers are catching quite a few eating-size crappie using light-colored jigs 6-12 feet deep in the major creek channels. Some fishermen are tipping their jigs with live minnows to make them go a little deeper. Hybrids and white bass are taking live shad and spoons around humps and road beds in 20-25 feet.

HARDING

Water conditions: Slightly below full pool; low to mid-60s; clear. Good numbers of bass have been hard to come by, but patient anglers are catching a few decent largemouth. The jig-n-pig has been the best bait, and most fishermen are concentrating on boat docks, rocks and points in 12-15 feet of water. Lots of good crappie are taking hair jigs around man-made brush piles. The lighter colors like blue, white, pink and yellow have been best. Hybrids, white bass and stripers are all feeding heavily on shad during the evening hours. Most of the action is taking place in the creeks. Rat-L-Traps, Sassy Shads and Strike King Series 3 crankbaits are all working well.

WALTER F. GEORGE

Water conditions: Down 3 1/2 feet; high 60s to low 70s; clear. Bass fishing has been good out on the main lake and in the major creeks and sloughs. Many anglers on the main lake are using Carolina-rigged plastics on the ledges in 8-12 feet. Those fishing the creeks and sloughs are having a ball using spinnerbaits and shallow-running crankbaits. There aren't a lot of big bass being caught, but some anglers have reported catching 25 to 30 per day. Crappie fishermen have been scarce, but a few anglers have reported catching 10- to 12-inch fish around standing timber in 10-15 feet. Hair jigs and plastic tube jigs in white or chartreuse have been working well.

SEMINOLE

Water conditions: A foot down; high 60s to low 70s; clear. As is often the case during winter, the bass fishing is super slow. Most of the fish have moved away from the shoreline, and fishermen have grown scarce. Crappie fishing has been hit or miss to say the least. On good days, jig-pole anglers are catching good numbers of crappie using live minnows around standing timber on the main lake.

CALLAWAY GARDENS

Water conditions: Some lakes are full while others are significantly low; 62 degrees; clear. Fishing Operations Manager Carl Warmouth says this has been an exceptional week for fishing at Callaway. Fishing has been incredible on Mountain Creek Lake every morning. Shad are schooling, and the bass have been feeding along the surface for up to two hours at a time each day. Many nice bass have been caught on fly rods and spinning gear. Several bass in the 5-pound range have been caught. Few people have been bream fishing, but several big bream have been picked up by fly fishermen on guided trips while fishing for trout. Trout fishing has been great. Trout are biting nearly any fly that hits the water. Several trout up to 5 pounds were caught this week. Special note: For more information on fishing at Callaway, call Kingfisher Outfitters at 706-663-5142.
