First Spring Fishing Trip

Post by johnnie crain outdoors »

Pro Staffers,
Here's a question I hope will be of benefit to beginning anglers, especially the ones that aren't lucky enough to be able to fish all year. " What is your first (go to) bait when searching for bass on your first outing of the year?? And why that selection??

Johnnie,
You know what my answer would be, but since you are asking for information to give to others on this board I'll go ahead and say it - A Tube.

It can be fished in several ways from swimming to crawling, and moved slowly. I may down size to the 2-inch version, since most of the food base is smaller in the spring.

I also like the tube because it can be easily sented, by injecting the Kodiak Crawfish paste. To hold the scent even more I'll place some foam, sponge or cotton on the hook shank if fishing it with a lead head. Although most of my tube fishing is with a Texas rig, using an XGap hook, which now can be used in the Bleeding Bait style by using a Fat Gap Daiichi.

Bet you knew what I was going to say, since you've only heard it 100 or more times when we do our seminars.

Dan thanks for the input, a tube loaded with scent is a good tool for early spring fishing as we both know. I like the green fleck colors to represent a spring crawfish. Those new Bleeding Hooks are great, adds a splash of color and excites the bass. As Joe Mo always says, I'm taking notes. Johnnie Crain Iowa Pro Staff. :p

That's right Johnnie, I've already noted all this.

You and Dan make a good Tag Team. Thanks for another good start for a new thread. Joe
