Decided to put in a little fishing time on the upper lake today since I had fished the Lagoon on my last trip. Been a while since I fished the upper Castaic.
Got up to the lake at around 8:00 AM. Had to drop my daughter Haley off at school first and there was some traffic coming out of LA, but it wasn't that bad.
Took this pic of Castaic Dam from the west side on my way down to the west launch ramp area.
For those of you not familiar with the Castaic Lake area I've included this little locator map with a red dot making the area I was fishing in.
Conditions were calm. I could see that there were a couple of bass boats out and it was not crowded.
Made my way down to the ramp and decided to get out on the point to the left of the ramp for starters. Water temp was 78, air temp was 72. When I left the house the barometer was 29.73 and had fallen a little since last night.
There is some cover there and submerged trees and some rock ledges that drop off. Actually the whole shoreline drops off pretty fast around there and ya gotta be careful not to slip off a ledge.
There was one other guy out on the point when I got down there but there was plenty of room for the two of us so I decided to set up about 30 yards off the point from where he was at. I started out casting off the cove side of the point.
I did notice that the other guy was also fishing with the Ika and some jigs. I saw him catch one on the Ika... it looked like a two pounder.
I was doing my usual rotation through my arsenal. Ika, dropshot, senko, jig, subsurface minnow etc. with no bite for about an hour.
Finally I connected with a small one on the cove side of the point fishing my light rig dropshot on 5 lb. Maxima fluorocarbon with a watermelon Zoom Tiny Fluke.
I fished on till around 11 AM on both sides of the point. No other bites.
Water level at the lake is still pretty high... you can see some of the trees submerged. This is a looking back at the ramp and the guard house on the east side of the west ramp.
Water clarity by Castaic standards was somewhat murky today. I would say visibility was about six feet.
When I packed it in at around 11 AM, air temp was up to 84 and surprisingly water temp was down to 76... which I figure was due to the increased wave action as more boats had made it out onto the lake.
So that was it for me... one small one on the dropshot. The other guy who was out there with me said he had caught two more earlier. Probably would have down better if I had been able to get there earlier.
Good fishing to you guys, later.............................. geobass
