swimbait...... Castaic has been a real tough deal lately. There are things going on at Castaic that nobody's talking about. Like treating the water to kill off invasive species... have you happened to notice all the dead clams on the shoreline?

If you want to catch the stoker trout with lures make sure to have a rod spooled up with light line..... like 2 or 3 lb. mono max. I have done pretty good on the trout in the Lagoon with 1/8 oz. silver or silver and blue Kastmaster.

The trout will also hit small inline spinners, and small shallow running crank baits like a small firetiger.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, it is even harder to catch the bass while there are a lot of trout in the water. I mean think about it, do you want a plastic hamburger when there is a real one right in front of your face??

Good fishing to ya, later........... geobass

Castaic lagoon and west ramp

Hi Geo,
Was out at the lagoon at 8:30 am today (Sunday) and as I was entering the water at Paradise Cove Butch came over and showed me at least a 15lb LMB that he caught over by where you fish off the point. It was actually a litte west by that white bouy that that has come off the regular line and is floating by itself. He caught it on one of large trout lures. I caught about 4 bass right off the Paradise Cove area in 20' (none of them worth bragging about). One of them had a huge red sore or boil on its side. I'm wondering if the chemicals are causing this. This is the second bass I've caught with this growth. Who could we ask at the lake and get a 'straight' answer as to what they are doing with the water in the lake? --Ron Lehman

Hey Ron!!! Good to hear you catching some good ones. Yeah Butch has told me the spot I hang out at is pretty good. Yes there are some pretty big ones hanging around there at times.

Butch has told me that he stays off the area if he sees me because he knows it's my thing, but he also has told me that he does fish it if I'm not around. Actually when you come right down to it the whole Lagoon is good. There isn't one side middle or ends that I haven't heard of some major biggies getting hammered there.

I don't know what to say about the sores on the fish. You are not the first one I've heard that from though. Later I'm going to make a post with some photos of dead clams that I took on the upper lake on Saturday.

I have seen some pretty scary evidence of something pretty peculiar going on. I didn't think much of it but about a month ago I was fishing at the Lagoon and twice while I was there I came up with clam shells on my hooks after a retrieve.
I though that was really odd but figured it was just one of those weird coincidences.

I know I have read your reports about catching some pretty nice bass regularly at the Lagoon when you go out but take my word for it..... this year in particular the bite has been way off from what it usually is.

Keep an eye out for my post "Killing Off the Clams at Castaic" and let me know what you think. I''ve got some pretty alarming photos and logic connecting some of these events to back up why I think something is going on that we are not being told about.

Good fishing to ya, later................. geobass

butch always catching those things, i think it is because the ONLY lure he uses is a hudd

Castaic lagoon and west ramp

Taking the dog for a walk today at the Castaic lagoon and spoke to a parks person who said they would be closing the public parking by the pier for repaveing but would open up the camping area parking lots to park on the East side of the lake. She also said Parks department plans on reworking the whole Eastern shoreline from the bank erosion to the broken concrete walks that are all along the East side. She said it would be a major project that they would be working on in 2009. Maybe they will get a parking lot placed down at the far Northeast side of the lake as it's a long hike to walk.

Thanks for the info Ron.

Actually if they are opening the parking lost in the campground area that is pretty good because there usually aren't that many guys going up to the north end of the lake and parking up there.

Even though I know you're sort of not supposed to drive up that road unless you have paid for a campsite I sometimes just drive right on up that road unless the attendant tells me to pull into the left by the pier.

So far nobody has ever said anything to me or given me a ticket. I do have an LA County Parks yearly pass on my windshield though.

Good fishing to you guys, later............. geobass
