Kram, I looked at the web site for the Ultimate Lure Retriever. It is a unique concept. I have read about these before, but haven't tried one yet. I use the Gripper Lure Retriever, they work just fine, but may try the new Ultimate just for fun. But, not during a tournament. I can see how they might work, but with crankbaits (which I use 80% of the time) the diving bill is usually the culprit, not the hooks. I think it would work great for those times we all hook a big glob of discarded line hung up in brush. I like all lure retrievers, without them, I couldn't afford to fish! Thanks for the site info. Not reliable. To much money and to much time. There is also the "plastic" link systems. Both are not worth it.

Kram - I've been using a lure retriever that has been labeled the "pocket rocket". Take a 1-2 oz catfish weight (the ones with the metal loop on top) and add a heavy duty double sided metal clip. One side clip to the weight and the other side is for clipping on your line. Just keep good tension on your line and let the weight slide down your line. You may need to get right over the snag and jiggle your rod a few times, but since I started using this I have retrieved about 95% of all my snags. The first place I really used this was at Lake Cumberland in KY. It was truly amazing how many jigs we retrieved out of the rocky shores of Lake Cumberland that day.
It's cheap and no worry about an extra rope to tangle and trip over. You can even make it cheaper by going to a local tire business and asking for the used or removed tire weights they use for balancing tires. Just get the correct weights and then put a small hole in one end with a drill. Then attach the double sided metal clip.
Also, like Johnnie, I crank alot and with this system, at the start of the day I just put a couple in my pocket and I'm ready. No opening a storage box to get lure retriever out. Just clip it on.
