Spring Bass...

Post by The St.Croix Legend »

The water that I will be fishing in has alot of spring time weed edges, Is a top water bait (bass rat - buzzbait) a good choice to go in there and get me a hog?

Thanks

Dennis,
A buzzbait is an excellent choice for springtime bass using weed cover. You may want to try a double buzz for larger fish and fish it slowly. If the weeds aren't too thick or you only fish the edges, I'd go with a large tandem spin spinnerbait with a twister tail grub trailer or pork frog. Fish this through any open pockets and the edges. If you can get by with swimming a 3/8th ounce jig and pig through the weeds, you may really latch on to a whopper, try to swim it just over the weed tops. I'd save the rat baits till later. P.S. Don't forget about floating worms fished wacky style, big ole bubble gum worm takes some hawgs. Good luck and keep us p[osted on how you're doing. Johnnie Crain

Dennis, don't sweat it, fish your strengths, it's you against the bass, no one else can beat you, only poor judgement or lack of bass. Good luck, hang tough. Johnnie Crain

Dennis I dont know were you are but I like to throw a Zoom Trick worm rigged weightless at the edge of that grass also. Just throw it to the edge and let it do its thing. The slow fall of the worm is really just to much for ole bucket mouth to resist. You can also use it as a back up bait in case the fish misses the buzz bait. If the fish miss the bait just throw the worm right in the boil were the fish was he will take it and the fight will be on.

To add to Conley's reply, sometimes when a bass blows up and misses a buzzbait, if you still have control of your mind, you can let the buzzer sink a couple of feet and swim it slowly underwater, the bass may attack the bait again. As with any topwater when a fish misses, it easy to come unglued. Best luck, Johnnie Crain, Iowa
