Angel Thompson was diagnosed with a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma on March 8, 2010 with surgery performed on March 10, 2010 to remove the tumor. The tumor is low grade and by the nature of pediatric brain tumors is considered to have cancerous properties. The doctors were able to remove 95% of the tumor but were unable to remove the portion found in her brain stem. She continues to receive physical and occupational therapy 3-4 times weekly in addition to numerous monthly appointments with doctors and other scheduled testing and scans. She continues to experience problems with balance, coordination, vision, hearing, and concentration. We were blessed with the outcome of the surgery. Our prayers and hope are for continued recovery and many more days. Doctors report a 45-90% long term survival with this type of tumor depending upon the location and amount removed. Most recently, a scan showed evidence of additional activity at the site of the tumor. Her oncologists reports that surgery will be the first option if it continues the current course as chemotherapy does not eliminate this type of tumor and they hesitate to perform radiation therapy on the brain of a six year old girl. Throughout this journey, Angel has maintained a positive attitude and strong faith in Jesus as her provider.
