Muddy Waters

It's been raining here in Indiana for almost the last week and the local lake is really muddy and at a high level. I have a tournament on Thursday and was wondering how you guys would approach this.

Tlaw,
If there is any flooded grass find it. Flooded grass cleans the water as it filters out the silt. You may have to fish on someones lawn, but find some grass or weeds. If grass or weeds do not exist try Fire Tiger color spinnerbaits fished slowly just below the surface, if possible add a rattle to the blade shaft and soak the skirt in Fish Formula Crawfish. You may also try a totally black spinnerbait, blades and skirt. Black is the most easily seen color in muddy water. Fish slowly. I have had some good success with a black skirted spinnerbait with an oversize orange blade in muddy water. Add a black twin tail twister grub to the spinner hook to give it bulk and move more water. Fish in muddy water feed primarily by sound and vibration so keep that in mind. The fish may not relate to any cover as they won't need to conceal themselves to feed so don't be afraid to try open water banks. Good luck my friend, Johnnie Crain

Also if you find Grass you may want to try a bubble gum or bright pink Floating or trick worm,,,,I have been spanked many times by this aproach by other anglers who use them with confidence.. ,,in tourneys up north and down south,,,(muddy water days)
I personaly have only caught a few with this method ((BUT an angler must have confidence it the bait they are using or they will not catch bass anyway))

Mr. Bass, amen! Those are good colors, I always say I'm using bubblegum color when asked, I just can't bring myself to admit using something pink. Johnnie :rolleyes:

When I am faced with muddy water, I love to find me any possible cover (near the shore) and pitch and flip a jig or over-sized tube. I will usually start out with a black/blue color or a simular color. Two other baits to consider are the spinner bait (with colorado blades) and chrt. crank baits. Make sure that you "bump the stump" with them.

Mark, you're absolutely right, bumping the stump can pay off in dirty water, the fish seem to really hold tight against cover when it's muddy. Good color selections too. Johnnie.

Mark Thats also excelent choices,
Mark Im guessing you are also an excelent night time bass angler,,
sounds like you have color selection and water displacement down to an science,
most of the time when i aproach a real muddy lake,I have the mindset of night fishing its always seems to be a good way to catch some of them hawgs,,Their are always many factors to consider but for me this is my starting aproach,
