Fish Finders...

Just want to throw a question out. I am in search of a new fish finder and am wondering if anyone could recommend a brand and/or model? Or recommend a brand and/or model to stay away from? And if they know a location to find a deal?

Garmin and Lowrance both make good units. I have used both and have nothing bad to say about either one of them.

Jeremiah is right, Lowrance and Garmin are good units. I use Humminbird and Zercom units which are great. I don't really know of any bad units, it all comes down to what you intend to do with the unit. For inexperienced anglers any unit in the automatic mode will show you the depth, any fish, baitfish, humps, ditches, etc,. Some will show by a line others by digitals numbers, some with both. Some have temperature guages built in and even trolling speeds. Most quality units offer a low price range model that is easy to use and will do the job. Think about what your primary use for the depth finder will be, then decide on the options you need. You don't have to buy the top of the line, but if within your pricr range you should, better to have to much than not enough. Good luck, Johnnie

Thanks for the response guys... I should have asked this question first probably. I recently bought a boat, and the front depth finder seems to scroll, but does not show a read out. It is a Huminbird wide one hundred. Could this be a problem with the Transducer?? I understand it is hard to diagnose the problem with never seeing the material, but if anyone has a suggestion let me know. I think this finder is a 1997.

Hey guy,
Try turning on the depth sounder while the boat is in the driveway. Listen for clicking coming from the transducer, if you don't hear any clicking ask someone with a similar model to swap the transducer and see if the new on clicks. be sure not to leave the unit on for more than two minutes out of water, they heat up fast! If it doesn't you need a new transducer, if it does next time you are on a lake Try turning up the sensitivity, it may be that you are sending out a signal but suppressing the return readout. If that doesn't work you need a electrical tech to give the whole unit a going over. Maybe a new Garmin 240 is in your front decks future.
