Changing equipment
I am adding a new rod and reel to my equipment. Started Bass fishing in florida with a 6ft one piece medium action spinning rod, and a Shimano 4000 Sidestab rear drag reel with 14lb test. I mainly fished golf courses, neighborhood ponds, and canels. Moved to Maryland recently and found out that I wanted to add to my equipment because it seemed that my set up was not good for the larger size lakes. I went with a 6ft 6in one piece medium to light spinning rod, and Shimano 2000 Spirex rear drag reel with 8lb test. I have not recieved the rod and reel yet but was wondering if that was a good addition for bass fishing in Maryland.

Airmayle,
Welcome to the site. I use Furnace Bay Rods for all my applications. MHXF 7ft baitcaster, 6ft 6inch MH spinning rod, and a 7.6 ft flipping stick. They make excellant products and are also located in Maryland.
For reels I use Quantam and Shimano, They just seem to work for me. If you need a hand locating Furnace Bay Rods feel free to drp me an email.
Good luck

Airmayle, I too welcome you to the site. First, I think the rod should have been a medium to medium heavy unless you are really into finesse fishing. Also, I would go for 12# line, 8 is okay, but risky at times. If you are fishing simply for the fight, then I think you have a good combination ordered. It will serve you well. Sometimes, as a tournament angler, I forget some people just enjoy fighting fish, win or lose. Have fun with the new outfit and good luck. Keep in touch, Johnnie

Johnnie Crain,
Thanks for the input. I wanted to go lighter because the area that I am fishing has very little cover. I don't have a boat so all my fishing is done on the shore. I need something that will get the lure out in deeper water. My Florida rod was set up to just hoist the bass out of the water. Bad thing was that it limited me on how far I was able to cast the lure. Most of my fishing was canels, and golf courses with a lot of cover and vegeation. I will take your advise and go with a 10lb test. Thanks for your time.

No problem buddy, since you are fishing from shore, you may have selected the right equipment, you'll need a little more forgiveness from the rod than you would with a boat, where you can go to the fish. Good luck, keep in touch, Johnnie
