If you could catch any type fish you wanted and it would weigh five pounds, which fish would you most like to catch and fight? I could pick yellow perch or yellow bass as they would be new state records, but they are not the fish I'd truly like to do battle with. How about you all? I'll answer later, Johnnie

The Mississippi (around La Crosse County) has been posting some huge crappies... I think it would be fun to hook into a 5 pounder. Otherwise across a 5lb smallie is nothing to sneeze at

I think I would have to go with a 5 pound Smallmouth.

Over the years I have caught dozens of Largemouth bass over 5 pounds but with the smallies being almost non-existent in my area, I haven't broke that barrier.

So far my biggest is 4 pounds 4 ounces. I caught it in a power plant lake in Northern Illinois. At the time I caught the fish the water temperature was over 100 degrees. About 10 minutes before I got that smallie, I nailed a 6 1/2 pound largemouth off the same hump. The best part was that it was in a tournament and I won by over 4 pounds.

a 5# smallie would be great. My largest is four even and I thought it was such a beautiful fish. Smallmouth have a special look about them, almost menacing. They are a great gamefish.
Sounds like you had a good tournament, I've never fished water at 100 degrees-parboiled bass. Have seen nineties in river backwaters as you know. Later, Johnnie

MMT- a 5# Pea**** bass would be great fun, they sure are a colorful fish and looks like they really fight. I've never had the pleasure of meeting one face to face.

MR Bass- wow, a 5# Bluegill? Can you imagine the fight that thing would put up? My largest wasn't even two pounds and it kicked my tail for awhile. Good choice. Johnnie

Lovefishn- A 5# crappie is do-able. Do you think the river has one that big? I have seen a four pound crappie once, took my breath away, what a monster. Good luck on landing one. At least when they get that big they no longer have "paper mouths", they have cardboard mouths. LOL. Johnnie

I have caught a 5 lb. smallmouth before and would love to do it again. I didn't know a fish like that could make so many runs and jump so much. On fathers day I watched my uncle catch a 4.8 lb. crappie (new state record for NE). It fought fairly well, but not a good as a smallmouth.

How about a 5 lb. spot. As mean as they are it could be real fun.

Mike, congrats to your Uncle on the crappie and yes, a 5# spot would be something else. I caught a four pounder and it fought like a pit bull against a Tasmanian Devil. Lots of fun. Have been trying to establish a state record in Iowa for spots, but with the fifteen inch minimum size limit on all bass am having difficulty catching one now, I threw the 4#er back before I found out there wasn't an established record, naturally. Okay guys, here's my choice. A 5# rock bass. Rock bass, warmouth, goggleye, whatever you wish to call them they are one tough customer. I have caught one at nearly 2# and it facinated me with its tenacity, what a great sportfish. Caught it on a spinnerbait, in a Missouri stream. When I was young my Grandpa would catch a lot of these on his old knucklebuster reels using jitterbugs and crazy crawlers on the surface. What fun. We called them Goggleyes and we ate them. Very good. I've only caught a couple out of the Mississippi river, not nearly as big, but fun nonetheless. Johnnie
