I want to get my 14 year old son an Abu Garcia reel for Xmas. His first baitcaster. He has used my old FIVE.
Should I get him a 4600 or 5600? I'm getting him a AG Conolon 6'6" MH rod for it. It will be used for all round Bass fishing.
Sometimes we'll go for Cats, stripes and whatever bites at the Pier on the coast.
I don't know if he should start with the narrower reel or if the bigger one will cover more situations.

Hey There Goodtexan
First off let me say welcome to the board!
Garcia reels are fine equipment. Thats about all I use anymore. You just can't beat them for all around performance. If it were me and all I was doing was bass fishing I would go with the 4600 or the new Torno low profile reel that they make. But since you mentioned going to the coast, 5500 would be a good choice because of the larger line that you can spool on there. I have 5000s, 5500s, and 4600s. The 5000 and 5500s seem to handle the bigger lines than the 4600.
Hope that helps some and good luck in your adventures.

I agree with Conley, the 5000 series reels are an excellent choice, especially considering the diverse situations you'll be facing. For long line trolling or still fishing with bait, the wide spools are best, for casting medium size lures the narrow spools are best, and much easier to use. Whatever your choice, Garcia will get the job done. Good luck and welcome to Bassin' USA. Johnnie

That makes three of us... The 5000 will give your son a lot of options and will cover most situations he will encounter.
I hope you both have some great times together with the new toy...

I use all Garcia, but the series I use is the 4500. There is a new one which may be of interest. It is a 1003, and has the magnetic adjustment. I haven't used one as yet, but do have one on the way. It is billed to have all the features of the more expesive reels at less money.
Best of fishing,
