Main Motor Battery

Post by dwreel »

I know battery care can be very complicated with numerous variables coming into play. But generally speaking, is the alternator on the big motor capable of keeping its battery up to full charge? Or should it be topped-off after each fishing trip? My original battery lasted almost 5 years and only had to charge it once because i didn't start it during the winter ( 4 months ). Currently, i crank the big motor at least once every week and let it idle for 15 min. but can't help but wonder if the battery is being replenished at idle. My volt meter is currently kaput. Will replace. But even then, will it give me a decent indication of battery power? I always top-off my trolling motor batteries before each trip as i consider them a good back-up should the main battery go dead. Appreciate everybodys input on this. Thanks guys.

****, if your battery is a good quality Marine crankin' battery, you'll never have a problem. Most outboard alternators supply just enough power to replenish the energy involved in starting the outboard. As long as the outboard is tuned and starts good you'll most likely only need to fully charge the battery about twice a year. I'll put some juice to mine before going to any bass tournament, but I don't worry about it much. I do however; and advise everyone to carry some jumper cables just in case. I don';t have anything hooked to my starting battery but the outboard, no accessories etc. Good luck and sleep easy. Johnnie

****, the only time I had a problem was when I left the master power switch on and the stereo drained the battery. The plus was that I had jumper cables and was able to start the boat easily. The alternator on my boat does a great job of keeping the cranking battery charged.
