line choices

Do they still make a baitcaster that is for braided lines? I hate to buy a reel and not have it last as long as it should. I have not seen any new reels that say that they are set up for superlines. Spiderwire/Mitchell advertised a reel for superlines, but have not heard a peep on their newer reels. What were the older reels and did they preform well? I might like to find one used but in good shape since I fish in the pads alot.

All bait cast reels are fine for Braids, it's just that you have to be a little more consious of what your doing, like over-setting the hook. I don't believe that braids will harm either a rid or eel is used as intended. Johnnie

we forgot about # test...

Hey bassin nj, what pound test of line you have determines many things...

For example, I read "MMT's" profile on the site...very interesting. Light tackle = big fish.
After reading it I went to K-Mart and rigged up one rod with 6# test Trilene line.

I think we should of said that a important factor of line is your # test...braided wire is thinner, and stronger, while mono is almost invisible at 4-6# test, which makes it better for finesse fishing.

Also, if you want to get down and dirty in the lilly pads for some hogs, maybe braided line would be better.
Like Johnnie said, braided lines have their uses.

Also another post here about Sufix DNA line sounded good. I might try that when my hybrid rigs go bad.

Mike most of these braided lines have a very small diameter. For example a common 20 or 30lb braid usually is a 6lb diameter line. The difference is that mono can be clear in color due to its composition, braid or twisted nylon cannot. Perhaps more important than size or weight of the line is the water clarity in which you intend to fish it. I only use it in stained or dingy water. Never in clear.

ya...I had a neighbor that fished with Spiderwire, I skunked him like 4-0 or 7-3 sometimes, and he was better than I back then. It was very clear water, and I was using hybrid line =P

Thanks for introducing me to finesse fishing...25 bites in an hour...only 6 fish brought in. That's another post though =P

Mike, in time you will learn to execute better and turn 25 bites into 25 fish landed. Did you break 'em off? I always say I'd rather hook up and lose a fish than to never fight that fish otherwise. I'll help you out if you need it. Let me know.

I've heard all the stories about braid and rod damage. I bought a custom Loomis last year and asked the maker about it. He said Loomis and Co.s have changed their guides, so braid is no longer a problem. I've noticed no ill effects on my rods. Carl

once I broke my tip off and glued a replacement on it.

After I while it had a big cut in it from my 30 some odd # test spider wire that was as thin as a 6# test mono.

You never know...how about a snarl on braided line?

Mike, did you replace your tip with one that has a ceramic lining? I use basicaly two types of line, Spiderwire Fusion (my favorite) and Power Pro. When I first started using the later backlashes were terrable since the line will dig into the spool. Then I took a tip from Uncle Homer and cast out then put a piece of electrical tape on the spool so if I get a backlash it's a snap to untangle. And if I'm fishing gin clear water I use A Vanish leader (a line which I hate). Well, that's my two cents on braid.

It was berkley or something cheap. It was 3+ years ago.

But you're right, it may not of been ceramic...

I just got Stren Extra Strenght; it's a big pain, I can't tie a polymer knot on that line to save my life. I finally did tie a polymer knot, but it was after 6 tries =D

Somebody said memore (or something like that) was a good line to try, but there are probably 2000 kinds of lines hehehhe who knows, they all catch fish I guess
