winter fishing

Post by carl »

JUst got off the water and didn't get a bite. Water temp 40-45, air around 50 with cloudy skies. I found plenty of fish holding in 20 to 30 feet. Used jigs, spinners and cranks, no luck. Would have liked to use vibrating blades, but they don't sell them in this area. Prsentations ranged from dead=sticking to ripping. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks. Carl

Wish I could help but I never seen water that cold! My suggestion is to move to Texas and start fishing.

No really looks like you did everything I would of done except a jigging spoon around some bait fish. Or ripping a rattle trap around some grass for that reaction strike.

Keep plugging away and you will connect sooner or later.
Thanks,
Conley Staley

Just got off the net looking for jigging blades. Had a heck of a time finding them, but found something interesting. Rapala has come out with a new jigging lure. It's supposed to travel in a circle among those deep suspended fish. I ordered them thru fishusa.com I'll let you know how it works. Carl

Carl, 40 to 50 degree water is perfect for using 1/4 ounce avocado grubs with a beaver tail. Mann's makes them probably others too. Fish these on light line right along the bottom. The fine wire hooks usually penetrate the lip so most hang themselves. These work great in clear impoundments with rocky bottoms, just glide the bait along the bottom, the fish will let you knoww their there.

Thanks guys; I'll give it a try Johnnie. As I mentioned on another post those new Rapala jigs worked well, got several bites, but lost 'em, probably due to bad technique. The lakes have iced again, so it will be awhile before we can get out. Later, Carl.
