grass growth

Post by bassman20042 »

Ok all,I'm puzzled. For the past 5 years,I have been watching my favorite pond, get overloaded with grass.Everybody says it's winter grass, comming up from the bottom. Most of the grass,is like hydrilla or algie looking. This stuff grows like wild fire, but then dies off in about a month. After it dies off,so does the bass fishing. My questions are this.First, what causes this grass to grow so early,if it's winter grass?Second is,if it's not winter grass, then what is it?Third is,what types of lures can I use,to start catching bass again? Most of my jigs and soft plastics don't work.Any help would be gratefull.I'm so puzzled about this. Thanks, Bassman

Bassman,
Can't tell about the grass without seeing it. I imagine your sift plastics and jigs are being lost in the root of the grass vegetation, it doesn't all die off, just the stems and roots are left, enough to hide bottom bouncing baits.
I suggest swimming a jig and double tail twister about a foot off bottom. Or try a Rat-L-Trap lipless crankbait fairly fast at mid depths to trigger reaction strikes. A swimming spoon with a pork frog might also work. Buzzing a regular spinnerbait across the surface always works for me also. Make a wake and hold on. Good luck, Johnnie

Hey johnnie, just wanted you to know, that I tried a rat-l-trap and only caught two bass. They weren't big,but good enough to know, that a different lure works most of the time. Thanks again.
