Red Hooks

Any you guys tried any experiments with the red hooks, trebles or line? I have, will report later. Johnnie

I switched to red trebles on my crank baits. Only changed the front hook and the fish I caught were all on the red hook. As far as plastics, can't really tell the difference. But haven't been on the water that much this year (truck troubles). I'll be interested in what you have to say Johnnie. Carl

Johnnie; I did try red hooks on soft plastic baits but never as a treble on a crankbait. I may be the odd man out but: I did not like red hooks and stopped using them. I did not experience any extra bites and actually witnessed less bites. I noticed most of the hooks would exhibit flaking and lifting of the red coating. I went straight back to my confidence hooks: Gamakatsu, Owner, and Mustad. I have never used red line so I can not comment on that. Maybe the red hook problems I had was just chance, I hope to read about other anglers experience with red terminal tackle.

Since I have switched to red trebles, I use the ,Blood Red Tru-Turn hooks, I have found nearly every fish has come on the belly hook, the only one I replace. By using the red on the belly hook fish take that hook and it's much more difficult for the fish to use the baits weight to throw the hook as so often happens with cranks when a fish shakes it head and jumps.
I've never had a problem with these hooks flaking or losing their color even after a full season of pounding fish, rocks and stumps. As for the red hooks in soft plastics it's debateable. Maybe I catch more fish on them due to confidence, but In have given red and bronze and black an eqaul and fair trial. I seem to get luckier with red.
I use the Cajun Red Line from Shakespeare and like the color, as for attracting more fish????
I have noticed it's more brittle than other lines and will break if it's kinked from backlashes like mine usually is! Next season I'm going back to the old tried and true blue Stren. I have had good luck with Bass Pro Shops copolimer line, seems to handle well and is tough, even with kinks.
My experiments with the new Ooze Blood Red fish formual is inconclusive because I think all good attractants help. I seem to catch abou an eqaul number using shad formula or the red Ooze???

I've got 2 of the same crank baits that I altered and it seems as if the one where I switched the hooks out for the red ones and I added red nail polish underneath by the lip seems to catch more.

We also have a 2 acre pond and when I go swimming the bream always hit the red spot in a tatoo I got on my leg. Fish can probably see as good underneath the water as good as we see above it.

Guys, just finished second place in the Burning Island Bad Boyz Grand Finale bass tournament and took big bass. I was using a Tru-Turn red hook on a Black Sapphire Zoom Baby Brush Hog coated with Red Ooze formula Shallow water lay downs. Cajun Red line also. I think this red thing is working out great so far. just a note. I was once told that the deeper the water, red is the last color on the spectrum to go. I remember last spring an outdoors newspaper writer went to several conventions, and reported the industry had gone nuts with red. Whether that was just marketing or there was a reason for it, I don't know. Anyhow congrats on your win Johnnie. Carl

Hey all,sorry for being gone so long.Been doing alot of local tournaments,and did pretty good.Placed 4th twice,3rd once,and second twice.After the first tournament,I changed my broze hooks,for the red ones,on most of my jerkbaits,as an experiment.I've noticed that the larger bass had hit on the red hooks.Either the red hooks work,or I did something different,on my retrieves.Either way,the fish just went nuts. see ya,bassman ( Ed )

bassman, congrats on your tourneys. I think this red thing is for reel. If it goes out of style, I'll be stuck with lots of red hooks and line LOL.
