Is green-pumpkin the best color?

Post by replica »

I have been reading alot about color selection and most seem to like green-pumpkin. I mostly fish central and northern wisconsin lakes and rivers for smallmouth bass. This mainly concerns texas-rigged worms. I recently purchased some 4" pumpkinseed colored worms and was wondering if they will do or if I should stock up on some green-pumpkin worms. Also, I noticed some companys make thier green-pumpkin almost brown while others are more green. Which is better?

It seems like most people like pumpkinseed for tubes and grubs, but I want a color that imitates a minnow or shad. 95% of the smallmouth I catch in rivers happens When using a 6" blue fleck ribbontail worm on a straight retrieve. And the only fish I catch while boucing that worm off the bottom are walleye and muskie.

I have found that any tube/worm color will work under most conditions. If the water is clear I like more green, if stained, more brown. If considered good water color-slightly stained, I like green punkinseed. A lot depends on water color and the forage base. Mostly shad? Greens and blues-mostly crawfish-browns and orange. Good luck, thanks for posting! Johnnie

I usually start of with watermelon, just because I heard K. VanDamn say you can't go wrong with that color, regardless of what part of the country you fish. Like everything else sometimes it works, other times zip. good luck, carl.

replica: Johnnie's spot on again. I found smallies in clear WI lakes love light to med shades of green. All of my WI smallies were caught on tubes. Personaly I think green(s) look more natural in clear water.

Over the years I collected quit a few different colors of worms that i just need to throw away.

I find myself using maybe 4 of those colors almost every time I go out.

First and formost color is Blue Fleck. For some reason that color will catch fish on any lake any time of the year. It is my biggest confidence bait in the boat.

2nd would be watermelon. I like you use it because KVD said it will work anywere anytime.

3rd is camo color. The camo that I use in not what you find in alot of brand name stuff but I buy in in bulk bags. It is junebug on top and cinnamon with red fleck on the bottom. It looks like a craw on the bottom and works great.

4th is the green pumkin and the one I use has more of a green tint to it than brown.

Those are the ones I find myself using almost everytime I go out.

White is another that I use for floating worms that I fish on top and let sink really slowly and jerk Like a jerk bait but that only works at differnt time of the year. For me

I think folks would save alot of time and money if they just stock ther tackle boxes with those colors because they work day in and day out. Its finding the fish thats the hard part.

Once again, good stuff from Conley, simply let me add, (purple), that has been my go to color for worms in clear water. I also like brown at times. Johnnie

Don't worry about just getting the watermelon seed. Pumpkinseed was the original "seed" color and still very good. I used it very often, and it you want something a little different, try something called "S_pike It!" to dip the tail. Gives off a bream look underwater. (For some reason it edited the work "****e"?)
If you want to get the watermelon color, go ahead and see if you can find the plastic you want in "Watermelon, red, purple" - I think right now only one company makes that color. Chompers.
Watermelon/Red is an amazing color, but as soon as cloud cover rolls through, that purple does something amazing. If you can't find that color, try june bug (purple flake) next time you're out and it gets over cast. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Money talks, I hate to listen, but lately it's been screaming in my ear.
