HELP- need a place to fish just outside LI

Post by robk »

Can anyone suggest a place to fish in NY, not too far off Long Island...someplace good for a daytrip?

Another factor...we have a 16ft boat with only a 55 lb. bow-mounted trolling motor. Please suggest somewhere where our power source will be ok.

Also, and I know I may be asking much, if there are any tips, spots, or tackle that anyone can suggest, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Rob- Living in CT as I do, Squantz Pond (a good-sized "pond" sectioned off of from famed Candlewood Lake) comes to mind. You cannot use a big outboard there anyway, so this would be a good place for you.
(Unfortunately, You will need a license) But before you decide not to go, the lake has a good population of Largemouth, Smallmouth, Walleye and Crappie. (And the Walleye and Crappie are considered extremely edible by
CT DEP.)

The biggest Plus in this equation isn't too obvious this time of year. But, next April and May when NY says "Whoa, stop!", you can cross the border and fish all day with your CT "Passport" (Fishing License). Licenses are issued effective Jan 1st and run for a year.

By the way, I have no vested interest in suggesting Squantz Pond. Only that you and anyone else can enjoy these waters when other
upstate NY lakes are effectively off-limits.

That's my vote. I'm sure there will be others suggesting additional promising locations. Good luck

Rob, go to Either Mahopac or Oscawanna. Both fairly close. Try to get access to the NYC Res.
