Lake Ronkonkoma, NY 12-11-05

Post by brendanc »

Well, who said that it's too cold outside in New York to still be fishing? Not I!

Had a chance to get out Sunday on Lake Ronkonkoma, which is one of the only ponds on Long Island that is not yet frozen.

Water temp: 36.5 Degrees
Wind: N-NE 5-10 MPH Variable
Water Clarity: Stained
Presentation: Carolina Rigged Live Shiners

My cousin Joey and I arrived at 11:30am and headed straight for the 66' hole near the southwest end of the lake. On the west side of this hole, their is a nice long under water point that pushes out into the hole. Joey boated a nice 3 1/2 Lb. Walleye on the first drift. We were marking fish mostly in about 22ft of water, so we focused on and around that depth range. On the third drift, I managed to catch a chunky 3 1/4 lb Smallmouth (that made my day). We continued working the area with several bites and finally Joey hooked into a really nice 4 lb+ Walleye. Three fish total landed for the day and we were off the lake by 4:00pm (It got a bit windy and really cold).

Not a bad way to spend a day in December...
