Craig's answer may sound a bit vague, but he is right... "Any time you're on the water". The jig N pig is one of the most vestal baits you can use. It works well under almost any conditions; it is known for its appeal to bigger fish and can be used at many different depths and in many different types of cover/structure.

This bait is a MUST for any serious bass fishermen… Check some of our articles for more on this great lure.

is it more effective when fishing cover and lilly pads or deeper water?

Curado I like to use that lure for "Short Line Applications". By this i mean Pitchin' and Flippin'. Its an awesome bait in any type of cover be it heavy or light. Use heavy line and keep the bass's head up. Its also important to watch or feel your line as the jig sinks, Bass usually hit as it falls.

I would consider myself a Jig Expert. It is rare that I go a whole day without at least pitching a jig somewhere. In my house, into my neighbors bird bath and the 4 days a week that I am fishing.

After a while you get so tuned in with your bait that you can feel everything.

Like the other guys, I will also say anytime you are on the water, is a great time to fish a jig.
