Spray On Clear Coat

Post by Instigator »

I recently started pouring and painting my own bucktails and parachute lures. Thus far the process has gone well and the application of the vinyl paint using a 3 phase (base white, primary color, and accent color) dip process has gone well. I am getting ready to apply the clear coat over the vinyl and was wondering if there is a good spray clear coat on the market rather than using the brush on process? Any recommendations on a clear coat spray on that provides a high gloss and hard surface would be appreciated.

An additional question is regarding the application of the adhesive 3-D eyes that are applied to the bucktails. Is it best to apply these eye before or after the application of the clear coat. My guess is before but I would rather here it straight from you experts.

Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated and will save me some time and money if I forge ahead and screw things up.

Thanks,

Spray On Clear Coat

Jim,

When making my own cranks I have tried the spray on clear coat and don't like it because I cant get it thick enough to stand up to the pounding that they take. I use Devcon Two Ton epoxy on all my baits. Yes its a pain to apply but your paint jobs will last for a long long time.

Conley,

Thanks for the kind reply. Since the product you mentioned is a two part mixture, can I assume you apply it with a brush. If so, does the finish come out clear or do you have brush streaks?

Also, is it ok to use on vinyl paint. Thanks for the info. My lures look great but I want to make sure I use the correct clear coat.

Regards, Jim

Yes it has to be brushed on. The brush strokes will not show because it is self leveling. If you have some way to turn the bait at about 3rpms it will come out just as smooth and pretty as you please, and yes it is clear and will work with just about anykinda paint out there.

Conley,

One last question (I promise). I looked up the Devcon Two Ton epoxy and saw that it was a 2 part mixture with the side-by-side injector. Can I assume this stuff will set up real fast and if so, how much can you mix together before it achieves a consistency that is to thick to brush. Just trying to get an idea on many lures (bucktails)I can clear coat with one tube so that I don't have to keep re-ordering it if I like it. I guess that smart thing to do would be to buy one and order more if it works out. Answer only when you get the time.

Thanks for the info and glad you did reply as the rest of this board is pretty quite for a message board.

Your right it is a two part mixture. You put equal amounts and mix together. It takes along time for it to set up. I can't tell you exactly how long because I never really watched it before. Like I said you have to turn the bait pretty often to keep it from sagging to the low side. You can also thin it down with Denatured Alcohol.

This is some tough stuff and its not very expensive if you go to Wal-Mart and get it in the paint section. There is also a web site you can check out it it www.tackleunderground.com it has all kinds of helpful hints on making you own baits. Its were I learned most of my stuff.

I picked up on the Lure Making Message board that you referenced from one of your earlier posts of about 2 weeks ago and for someone who know little on this subject (me), it provides a wealth of information. I was impressed. Again, thanks for the information.
