I can and sometimes do use light line (8 to 10 lb. test) on a very fast tip casting rod to toss 1/16oz jigs and balsa minnows like the AC Shiners.
While most of my casting rods are set up this way, I have a few that carry 12-14 lb. test for Striped Bass.

For folks who don't have YEARS of experience with casting rods I do not reccommend light lures.

Even I don't get away with it all the time! Laziness and/or impatience will get you in trouble every time.
