Fish hooked in bottom of mouth

Post by johnnie crain outdoors »

Here's one I can't figure out. This week I have fished three different lakes and the majority of the fish I'm catching have been hooked in the bottom lip of bottom of the mouth. I've caught them only plastic snakes crankbaits and spinnerbaits all hooked the same way??? I'm baffled!! Any ideas? Johnnie

Fall fishing at it's best, John! Lots of competition for the available amount of food, when multiple fish attack something they tend to 'roll over' on the bait therefore lining the hook up in the bottom jaw.
How do I know? Most of my water here in Maine is crystal clear and I can watch fish, sometimes as deep as 12 to 15 feet deep.

This bottom jaw hook-up also occurs when the fish are face down (vertical) in the rocks looking for crawfish.

This is very interesting indeed gentlemen!!!

I have never heard of this nor have I ever experienced anything like it.

I have only noticed that particular rigs tend to hook up in a certain way....for example the way dropshot rigs have a tendency to hook up in the corner of the mouth.

Noticing a trend for a particular point of hookup bassed on a day or season has never happened to me.

But after reading this information I will certainly be keeping an eye out for it.

Good fishing to you guys, later................... geobass
