In thoery you are bringing in less total inches per crank. They are still coming in at the 6 to 1 speed, so slow might not be the right term.

Man, have you guys confused me.
The reel ratio is constant, the line retrieval amount varies.
Hypothetically, bring a spinnerbait back to the boat, say 50 feet, you'll have to turn the handle 50 times in one minute, with a full spool.
The same spinnerbait, same distance, same amount of turns, it will take longer with a half a spool.
I believe that with less line on your reel this will slow the speed of your lure down.
Maybe.

Brian,
You are Correct. That is what I have been saying all along. Atleast I thought I was.

I'm fairly new to the pro staff but believe if you were to take 2 reels with the same gear ratio, one being smaller ( spool size ) and reel both at the same speed ( handle )the bait would reach the larger reel 1st. Why? Because although the gear ratio's are the same the larger spool takes up more line with every complete turn. Line diamater will also change the speed of retrieve slightly because it fills a spool faster increasing the overall size. Thats my take on it. Eric Picarella, PA

Ok! Topic: Have you ever found a techique by mistake? Yes my nephew, brother, & myself were fishing a cove with plastic worms. We were not doing that great when Joey (nephew) was reeling up to make another cast when a 4 lb bass clobbered the worm. I just smiled and started buzzing my worm "BAM" another bass. Well needless to say we all 3 started buzzing worms and limited out! I believe letting the fish tell you what they want!

Jerimiah, I have a similiar story to your over the shoulder hook set. I was wade fishing and lobbing an 8" Phenom worm into some shallow willow trees when I got a strike and swung on it. I missed and the bait sailed over my shoulder and out into deeper water. I put the rod over my shoulder and slowly started reeling the bait in as I contemplated my missed fish. As I cranked, the worm just stopped. I swung the rod over my shoulder and forward and hooked a solid bass. This one pulled drag and I turned around to face it. I was amazed as I weighed a 6-12. It was totally by accident. Almost like my partners..."I'll take ten minutes to pick the birdsnest out of my baitcaster only to have a smallmouth swallow the bait every time" approach.
