how do i get there?

Do you have any preference as to what type of hair you like? I too prefer to trim it down so that the bite is clean. Although it helps to keep things a little slower and thats a plus when its cold.

Frank,

I have caught more and bigger fish on the bucktail, but I haven't been using the marabou for that long... could just be a confidence thing.

Nunz, no problem... You mentioned another post asking about inlines... you might want to put a pointer to this post on the other...

i definetly believe that the mepps will catch fish, i think its the best trout spinner ever made,i have numerous limits on it,but will they catch quality tournament large mouth, and not just alot of fun catching babies? the reason asking is there are only largemouth in this lake,no smallies and the main baitfish is blue back herring

Jason,

I have caught more big bass on in-line spinners during the cold water period (specifically the 49 - 59 degree temp range) than with most other baits. It is not my #1 big fish tactic, but it is in my top 3. The water temp makes a huge difference in what hits these lures.

Last year I had 2 largemouths over 6 lbs on an inline, a 4 over 5 lbs, too many to count that were from 3 to 5 lbs and last March, I caught my personal best on an inline:

Although I was not able to weigh her in (out of season), a fair estimate would be 8.5 lbs.

To put it simply, I consistantly catch more "big bass" on inlines, than smaller ones...

Just to confirm, you said water temps were in the low 50's right now, is that correct?

I'm also thinking that S.C. bass (who love spinnerbaits) probably don't get to see inlines very often. You'll also be at a disadvantage fishing from the back of the boat, so the guy in the front will most likely get first crack at the fish... you might be able to catch the ones that are a little more timid, that do not go for his offering.

My advice is stick with your primary game plan. After hearing your response, I feel that you might be better off trying this technique during a practice or fun fishing day, rather than during the tournament. You want to build up some confidence in the inline, before you put it to the tournament test. If you do want to try it during the tournament, I would say limit the time you spend on it. Make 20 or so cast at each area and see if you can get something going. If you don't connect, at least you didn't waste a lot of time trying something different. Just be sure that you work it like I explained... slow and deep! You just want to feel that blade barely thumping and making contact with the bottom.

If you need to get an inline down deeper try a Panther Martin, fishes slow and deep, great cold water spinner.

well guess what, i pulled it off guys, i caught 4 of the only 7 fish caught all day, and u wanna talk about tuff, the water was like glass, and the fish where ther but werent moving at all, they woundnt touch anything untill a slight breeze cam upon and recomended that we try 2 fish a couple points in the distance, well i pulled out a drop shot rig and missed 2 small ones, then i noticed sum schools of bait under us and fiqure 2 try a jigging spoon since all else has failed,me and the other guy in the boat both hooked up on our first drop, then within a hour i caught 4 that weighed in at 6.97 and second with one fish was billy with one fish at 3.01 and the big fish off the day
