Tow Vehicles

For the most part I have been staying in Motels, but this season I will be fishing twice as many "far from home" tournaments, including an Everstart that will keep me away from home for 2 weeks with a BFL the week before. To answer you question, alot of campgrouns have bathrooms and showers, and some have electricity. I'm interested to hear everyone elses approach as well.

The year before last the closest tournament to my house (that I fished in) was approximately 3 hours away. The rest were 4-9 hours away. I stayed in hotels for most of them. There was a couple of times that I camped at a state park which had very nice showers and electricity. Once me and my travel partner slept in the truck at the marina due to a lack of hotel rooms within a 50 mile radius. That was not a fun time.

It makes it a lot more affordable to stay in hotels when you have a travel partner but if you want to save a lot of cash, check out the local state parks. Most of them aren't too bad and won't break the bank.

I use a 2003 Chevy Suburban. In fact, I've had 3 such vehicles, and they are great for towing about anything. They are also super for using in ice fishing season for carrying the portable shelter, drill and other gear. Not to mention the heaviness of the vehicle with the 4-wheel drive when needed in the snow, or in open water season at some boat ramps.

As for a mini-van, several years ago I was going that route, but was glad I didn't. Two anglers told me of some bad stories. One of which was when he got caught in a cross wind while towing his bass boat. The whole thing started swaying, and he almost was killed. He got rid of the vehicle in 3 months.

Then an Illinois State Policeman said when ever they see a mini-van towing a large boat they want to shut their eyes and pray. He said it is like the tail wagging the dog.

All of this convinced me to go another route.

I've heard some very good things about the Trailblazers. In fact, a friend towed a boat in Nevada with one, and he was amazed that he got in the 20+ mpg range.
