Well my brother and I fished our first Tournament in the Texas 100 on the 2nd. The morning started off slow. We missed a big fish early that morning fishing two foot of water in a brush pile, and it was a bigun.
I didn't think the fish would be that shallow but they were. We caught another keeper later and a few small fish all were in less than five foot of water and the keeper that was caught was caught on a worm in water so shallow the trolling moter was kicking up mud. All the fish were caught on Berkley 7" power worm in my favorite Blue Fleck. I quess what Im trying to say here is never rule out shallow water to catch fish this time of year. Warm days make the fish go shallow here.

The one keeper weighed in at 2.45. Nothing to brag about but with the luck I been having latley I was glad to finally catch a keeper. Got some of my confidence back and am ready for the next one. Besides in a point race for the end of the year standings
a 2.45 fish weighed in is a lot better than that big goose egg setting beside your name any day.

Im going to be keeping a journal on my fishing on my web site this year on each tournment that I fish and some of my prefishing trips that I take. If you would like to keep up with TEAM STALEY you can check it out at www.geocities.com/mofish66
I would have written more on the first tournament but just didn't have time.

Good luck to everyone in their fishing this year and may all your fish be wall hangers.

Second tournament for TEAM STALEY was at Whitney lake on the 03-02-03. What a great day we had. It was overcast and a little windy. First fish of the morning just 30min into the tournament was a 5.75 that was good enough for 4th big bass of the tournament. We finished the day in 6th overall with 13.60 for 4 fish. We just never could get that 5th fish.

Suface temp was 48. Lures were Black/blue jig with the new Strike King 3x craw worm trailer and Carolina riged Zoom Lizard (big fish on lizard).

Best thing was top ten finish and the points for the end of the year standings. Course cashing a check didn't hurt either. lol.

Well the third tournament was at lake Lewisville. When we arrived at the motel on Sat. night it was quite a sight to see. We were putting the covers on the boats and locking every thing down. As I was plugging the boat in to charge the batteries (fished a tournament on Sat too with the CAST) lightning started skriking and the 2nd worst storm I have been in started. Hail, high winds and lots and lots of rain. There were hail stones the size of base***** hitting all around and the electricity in the motel went out. We all stood at the windows watching the hail come down and not one of them hit our trucks or boats. Some one above was watching out for us.

Anyway to the tournament. Well you can probably imagine how that went after a storm like that. We had patterned fish on the bridge pilings from a preveous tournament that we fished there just a week ago. My brother caught 10lbs worth of spots of those pilings. We started there and the first cast of the morning put a 16" black in the boat for me. My thoughts were that we were going to limit out quick. Boy was I wrong. The Second fish came about five hours later and alot of white bass in between. We looked at each other and said it wasn't working we needed something different. We fished and fished and caught alot of small fish that would not keep. We ended with two fish for a 54th place finish. We dropped down from 12th overall to 25th.

Sad thing is this is the last tournament I get to fish for a while due to the back surgury that will take place on the 21st of April. Joe will have to fish the last two solo. I know he can catch the fish and keep us up the in the rakeings. Its just hard to know that there are two more left and I cant be apart of it. Its a killer guys and gals.

Take care of yourself and keep in shape. Make sure you stretch and limber that back up before you do any lifting. Please Lift with the proper methods that we all know we should do. Once you are down in the back its hard to recover from it. Plus you miss out on a lot of good fishing!!!!!!

Take care All

Oh yes I hope to get caught up on my article writting and some helpful hints to you guys while I'm down. If I cant fish at least I could write about it. Right????

Conley,
Congratulations on a strong finish. Sorry to hear about your back. You know we all do things to our bodies that we shouldn't and "boy" do we pay. All of your posts were interesting, I love reading about tournaments. You'll be back-stronger-better-wiser. Looking forward to your next posts. Johnnie Crain

Ok folks I missed the last two tournments of the year due to my back problems (that are all fixed up now> Thanks to the ones that sent messages of a speedy recovery). We finished 35th over all my brother did good!
We go to the championship in OCT. Last year we finished 72nd so this year we improved 37 places. What a jump!! If we imporve that much next year we will take the Angler of the Year trophy with it. Yea right! One must set a goal and we did. One to make the Campionship and 2 to finish in the top 20. We got close on the last one.
