We started out today at 6:30 AM, launching out of Havre De Grace, Maryland, with water temperatures in the high 40's, with a bright, clear sky, with 5 MPH winds out of the East.
It was a little cold running at 65 MPH on the bay early on, but when we made our first stop at the rip-rap outside of Swan Creek and hooked a nice bass on a "Spotsticker" spinnerbait, we soon forgot about the temperature. It was a good bass of 3 pounds and our partner at Anglers Radio and Delaware Tackle, Chuck Warren, was the first one to hook up with a good bass today.
We worked on into Swan Creek, but found that the water temperatures were much lower than expected at 47.8 degrees, and even though it was shallow, off color water, on the north shore, there was no real grass, and the fish were a little turned off in there. I think the lack of vegetation, and the lower water tempertures put them off a little in that area. We did well last week in the same areas, but after the colder nights they seemed to back off.
We left there and headed to the Northeast River, and we picked up several nice bass of 3 pounds plus, on an "IKA" tube in smoke with a gold glitter, and a 3/8 ounce Tru-Tungsten weight, flipped into the docks.
The air temperature had warmed to 73 degrees by 12:00 PM, and we decided to run into the Susquehanna for some smallmouth and possibly largemouth by the I-95 bridge.
We had one small bass of 15 inches come from the bridge, but it was slower than usual in there, despite the water being warmer at 56 degrees.
We had a radio show to do and we had to make a long drive back to the studio, so we called it a day.
It was not one of the better days for us there, but was still productive, and we learned some things about the Northeast in the early spring, which will come in handy later on again this year.
The action should really be hot in a few more days in all the rivers, as the weather is just going to get warmer now, not colder, and the rains are predicted to be lighter than expected and faster moving, and we will most likely see sun in the afternoon by Wednesday.
This weekend should be good in all the rivers, and crankbaits, Senko's, and spinnerbaits should produce some good weights in the tournaments there on Saturday and Sunday.
Well, it's been a long day and we better get some sleep, as we will be on the Potomac river later in the week, and then the Nanticoke after that.
Be sure to catch the radio show tomorrow night, as it is a special show with some people you won't want to miss. Just drop by Anglers Radio at www.anglersradio.com for "live" fishing reports, and get some tips on the new products that are coming out from Yamamoto and TTI-Blakemore this year.
Our guests were Russ Comeau (Bassdozer), TJ Stallings of TTI, and our special guest, good friend, and "Angler Of The Year", Aaron Martens.
Aaron talks about everything from bass fishing to his new daughter, and gives a few tips that you won't get on any other show. It is an interesting and informative look into the things that landed Aaron the title of "Angler Of The Year"
Until next time, Steve, Kurt, and Chuck saying, "tight lines and see you on the water".
