-With the water temps on the rise and the Smallies slowly departing into their summertime patterns in NNJ, I decided it was time to go up north and try to find some action... managed to go on a commando mission up to Maine the past 2 days and man was I happy...
-I drove up to the Augusta area and stayed right on Cobbossee... place was nice... eventhough I didn't have my boat.. they had free boat slips for guests... , The upside was that they also had free canoes for use as well... They even sold Yamamoto's and Booyah's in the motel office... .. Anyways... Only fished the lake the night I arrived for about an hour from a conoe and poked a few (LM's) on top... But that wasn't the mission of the trip...
-I ended up taking a guided trip on the Androscoggin River.... headed out there with a guy named Jack Duggins.. What a Pimp... you haven't fished with anyone, until you have fished with this guy... What a classy dude... makes you laugh all day, Has loads of stories, gives great facts about the land and wildlife... and knows the river like a champ... he has a Jet Boat, which is great, and lets you get to spots while other boats are just looking at you saying "WTF?" ... has a extension from his TM, so he can control it from the back of the boat (and you can fish from the front...), gave excellent boat positioning all day, and eventhough I brought my own stuff.. He had multiple rods as well as bags, and bags loaded with goodies to throw.. (he usto be sponsered by Yamamoto, so he's got crazy Senko Colors and plastics I have never seen before...)
Ok enough of him...
-Headed out around 8 am and was immediately put onto fish... (we fished just above Lewiston, about 70% of the areas we ran to would be if not, definitely next to impossible to get to in a regular rig...) Started out throwing the popper and they were just crushing it... If one missed it, another one would hit it... it seemed like every other fish that was brought to the boat, there would be 2 or 3 of his buddies along side of him.... (It was true smallmouth acrobatics at it's best, double-ups, triple-ups... fish were coming from on top and slamming the popper lunging out of the water coming down on it like a house of bricks) ...After crusing around the river for a while and catching fish on top, we started to work some rapids..... I swiched up between the Fluke and the Senko and was just hammering them 1 after another... Even got a decent one on a crankbait fished about 100mph down with the flow of the rapids ...
After moving from spot to spot throughout the day... the fishing never really slowed down...
-Currents and breaks seemed to be the key.. and Topwater was definitly the best producer for me....
-The Popper, Sammy, Flukes, Fat Ika's, Senko's and Crankbaits also joined the party...
-Boated well over 60 Smallies and had a day to remember...
