Slider Fishing
I've always been really into Slider fishing. It is a great method to take bass just about anywhere in any condition. Any of you guys use this technigue the way Charlie Brewer taught it? I just reread the book and watched the video agian, good stuff. I've slipped away from it but plan to re-incorperate it into my fishing next year.

Slider Fishing
MMT,
I know that slider fishing has been good in the past, and mostly overlooked for a couple of years due to slit shotting, drop shotting and wacky worm fishing. I think that the slider and techniques involved will make a come back soon. Anglers are really changing their techniques lately going with smaller, swimming baits, I.E. tubes etc. Swimming jigs and worm popularity is growing so I the Slider should make a come back. Anyone that doesn't include a few slider baits and techniques may be in trouble. Good post, thanks, Johnnie Crain Iowa Pro Staff.

MMT & Johnnie- I became a Slider fisherman in the early 70's because Charlie Brewer wrote for Fishing Facts magazine. Every month he would take the reader fishing and explain in minute detail how to just keep reeling slowly and not to give the lure any action. I don't believe there was a freshwater fish that he couldn't catch with the Slider.
Couldn't wait for each issue to come in the mail. And you could order everything right from the magazine. The technique worked then and it works today and it will probably still work thirty years from now without a doubt.
The biggest change (for the good) was the Spider Slider jig. (IMHO)
Craig- Another great thread may have just started here. As Johnnie said we may all have to keep Sliders in our game plans or we might not do as well.
Thanks to you both. Much obliged. Joe

Slider Fishing
I've used a form of Slider fishing for a long time. The two 4-inch worms used have been Mann's Jelly Worm and Berkley's Power Finesse Worm.
These are placed on a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce lead hear (I like the Kalen bullet or Bull Dog with the larger hook), and slide the lure along by pulling the rod tip parallel to the surface. I don't lift the rod tip, and when setting the hook it is with a sweep, as with a crankbait.
My colors are black, pumpkinseed, and black grape. Not many, but they work.
I'll also rig these Texas style with a small weight, and a 1/0 XGap hook, and fish them in the same way.

Hey, Dan, ever used an Ugly Bug Plus? I have had some good catches on these, but like most everyone else, have strayed away from them for fancier baits. I think I know, you are a great finesse angler, I'll be there with the net. Johnnie Crain Iowa Pro Staff

Dan, I'm with you on color selection. I have a box full of basic colors. I just got a package of camo and watermelon. Those along with Black, Pumpkin and blackgrape are the only ones anyone will ever need. I did use a purple with silver flake for a period and it was also a good color.

Hey Guys,
I'm relatively new to this sport. I've been following this post trying to get a mental image of this technique but I can't seem to get a grip on it. Can anyone explain to me what slider fishing is?

Rob,
Slider fishing is a relatively old term by now, but the general scope of the technique includes using light line, 6# etc., usually a spinning outfit and a compact (finesse) type bait. Many anglers use a jighead tipped with a two to three inch plastic worm, there are several variations of slider fishing. Some of the earler Slider baits used a flat bottom head design, which actually caused the bait to "slide" right or left of the rod on the fall, instead of straight down. I have used this technique a lot by using a Concave Jig from Freshwater Tackle Company, coupled with a three inch twister tail.I prefer crawfish colored heads and bodies. A crawfish slides through the water as it swims, rarely going in a straight line, this is the right approach to fishing any type Slider rig, swim it slowly with long rod pulls, retreive the slack and continue. The Concave Jig Head, has a inverted oval shape on the bottom which imparts the needed action. Again, there are several Slider rigs available. On any Slider Rig, the body should be small and compact and fished with a slow-fluid action. Hope this helps, keep in touch. Johnnie Crain Iowa Pro Staff.

Now I know why guys go to your seminars, Johnnie. In as few words as possible, you can describe a technique to someone a thousand miles away and now he knows what this thread is all about.
Keep it up. This is special stuff. Imagine how many guys just drop in to read these gems. The good stuff is on this website, fellas.
As one of my old bass mentors would have said: "That sure is bassy" Thanks for everything. JoeMo

Rob, check out slider baits website. Do a search for Charlie Brewer slider company and it should come up. The book and video are very cheap and well worth it....if not just to get you thinking in a different frame of mind. When I learned how to Slider fish in about 1990, it totally revolutionized the way I approached this game....for the better!!
