Plastic baits that work and save you cash

Post by bassin butch »

To all: I began buying KINAMI baits at bass pro shop a year ago, the DT grub (spider grub) is excellent. At 3.99 a pack it's anywhere form 1 to 3 bucks cheaper than the YAMAMOTO version. The Kinami stick bait is the same story cheaper than Senko's.

Plastic baits that work and save you cash

Butch- Funny you should mention BPS and Kinami baits. Last Saturday a guy waved some of those Stick-o BPS baits under my nose. I looked, but I didn't bite. At least Kinami Baits are "all in the (Yamamoto) family"

How many Kinami "Flash" baits in a bag? Is it seven?
Thanks for posting.

I myself have only just begun using these Senko type baits. Until recently I simply refused to be a "follower", but when I watch someone outfish me 6 to 1 from the back of my own boat, it's time to follow! Now that I have caught several fish this way, I almost consider it "cheating" because they work so well! Anyway, I found that there are at least three different brands of this popular "craze bait". The most famous "Gary Senko" for more than $6 per pack, a second brand (which I can't remember the name) but Causeway Bait Shop carries them for about $5 per pack, and the Kanami version which WalMart carries for only $3.86 per 7-pack. All three brands look identical, yet the prices vary quite a bit. I just purchased 12 packs of the least expensive Kanami baits (5-inch), and as I use them I will update the boards with performance, and productivity results.

Ed- Thanks for posting your plan to try Kunami Baits. Sold at Wally World, huh?
Good idea. And let us know what the other brand was. (Maybe it is Stick-o?)

But remember what a good friend of mine told his son: "If they are biting on the wacky worm (not Senko), put away the Senkos"

At 60 cents a pop, a bag is worth more than my Lucent stock! (Of course, so are a lot of things. lol)

Thanks Ed for posting. Keep bringing up anything you think is relevant.

Joe Mo: there is seven lures in every kinami bag. Re: Walmart I have never seen Kinami baits at a Walmart. But if Wally is going to carry these I'll be shpping there. FYI: Kinami baits are produced by Derek Yamamoto.

OK, I stopped at Causeway today, and like I said there are three versions of the Senko. The one that I couldn't remember is the "Venom Salty Sling". I bought five, one of each color at $4.99 per pack. And with the club discount that Causeway offers, I ended up getting them for about $4.00 each. The quality appears to be very similar to that of both the Yamamoto brands. However, the only obvious difference that I could notice is that the Venom's are sold as 10-packs while the Senko's and Kanami's are both 7-packs. The ultimate test still remains to be seen though. We all know that the true Gary Senko can catch bass, but how will these other "look-alikes" match up? Probably just as well, but the ones I will continue to purchase will be the ones that last the longest on the hook without falling apart so easily. Funny how just a week ago I didn't own a single Senko, and now a few days later between Kanami's and Venom's, I now have over 130. In this sport it only takes one time getting your butt kicked to learn a lesson!

P.S. WalMart opened a new store about one year ago in Levitown, N.Y. and yes, they do carry Kanami baits!

Ed- Thanks for the update. The interesting thing about the Senko is that it has made far more guys into dead-stick anglers. If we use the advantage of dead-sticking with more of our baits, I believe the gap between the Senko and say, a Jersey Rigg wacky setup would narrow. I didn't say there would be no more gap; the Senko's unique balance/weight due to the salt load gives a distinct advantage to the Yamasenko. But competition will keep trying to narrow that gap. We like to say it's the "American way". (It isn't American; it's human to compete.)

Oh yes, both Butch and Ed, thanks! I'm going to check out Wal-Mart up here. It is still being built. Keep posting. This is great! JoeMo

Senko - Kanami - Venom.... Update!

OK so it's not "magic bait", and no one brand seems to be made any better than the other.

When the high winds came rolling in last night at Forge Pond, the fishing got very tough.

In desperation I tied on one of the Venom type baits (wacky style) and proceeded to toss it about for two hours in the dark without so much as a nibble. Had to use half of the ten-pack because they seemed to leave the hook in the same "Senko" fasion after only a small number of casts.

Basically, if it looks like a Senko, feels like a Senko, falls apart like a Senko....Then it must be a Senko! The're all the same! Buy the cheapest one you can find!

Ed- I've been able to study Senkos in some pretty clear water, especially our 55 acre lake up here in CT which doubles as our water supply.

Senkos have that perfect combination of salt allowing a slow (but not that slow) sink rate while also producing a lively wiggle/roll that just may not exist in the knockoffs.

One southern angler has gone to great lengths performing tests on many of these pseudo-Senkos. When I last read one of his posts, he was talking about "adjusting" the size of Zoom Trick Worms in an effort to duplicate the Senko action/lack of action.
Man's ingenuity might just get it right one of these days.

That's why I am looking to get some of these
"cousins" to experiment with.

Point taken Joe! I plan on giving them a more true "daylight" test run this Sunday at Hither Hills.
