When I was shopping for a spinning reel, the reel I chose came in two different models, a front drag and a rear drag. I asked the sales rep about the advantages and he said that other than personal preferance, the rear drag models allow you to make adjustments quicker. He then added that most people usually don't even use drag-- they crank it down pretty tight.

Are there any other differences aside from what the rep told me? If anyone has used both types, can you share your experience with them and let me know if there was anything about one that made it better for you?

How ya doing man. I've used both Rear & Front Drag models....in my opinon it really does come down to personal preference. Some people do argue that the rear drag is within quicker reach for those "emergency" drag adjustments. As far as what that guy told you about crankin' that drag down all the way...bad idea...especially if you use light line....Precise drag adjustments are cruicial in my book... Here's a tip on checking the drag on a spinning reel...instead of making an ajustment and pulling the line out to check the drag tension...turn the spool around and feel the resistence that it gives you. By doing this you will get much less line twists. BaitCasting Reels: do not pull out the line to check the drag instead hold your thumb on the spool and crank the handle to feel the drag pressure. By doing this your line will not bury into the spool allowing you smoother and tangle free casts. I hope this helps.

Front drag reels are generally smoother and more reliable
Rear drags are easier to adjust and generally heavier.
