I'm traveling up to MI at the end of May to try some smallie fishing, the lakes are in Cheboygan county. Have any of you guys fished this area before? Can I expect the spawn to be on or off at that time? I'm planing on fishing with the following: Tubes, spider grubs, jerk baits, and top waters. Do you think my choices are correct based upon the time of the year?
Kevin Van Dam stated in Bass Master magazine that this area is excellent for small mouth.
Thanks

Small mouth fishing in Michigan?
Bassin Butch,
Sounds like fun to me. I thinki you will be fishing post-spawn smallies in late May, of course that depended strictly on local conditions. Your lure selections sound right on the mark, but I would include some large, willow leaf spinnerbaits.I know Kevin and he'd never fish smallies without burning some big spinnerbaits across the surface. Also, small crankbaits fished down points and any rock cover will take smallmouth, try brown tone colors. If you have access to any hair jigs, try a fly and rind combination, a hair jig with a small pork strip trailer, this is a dynomite combo for brown bass. If the water is clear make long casts and work the bait fast. Top waters are a good choice, the smaller zara spook, Storm Chug Bug and Tiny Torpedo baits are great. Have fun and keep us informed on how you did. Johnnie Crain, Iowa Pro Staff.

I fish up in Door County in early spring time, It may not be the water you are looking for feed back from but it is smallies you are going after right? Well dont forget about a white spinnerbait and my new favorite is a weightless 5" senko.
