Castaic Lagoon, CA: 10/4 and 10/6

Well I did get to take a 1/2 day off as planned to fish in the middle of the week. Thursday afternoon, 10/4 left work at around noon and made it up to the Lagoon and had my worm in the water by 3:00 PM. Fished it till it got dark.

Weather was beautiful, air temp was 74, water was 68. Some of my buddies showed up. Thre were four of us fishing on the south end. Only one guy got a 1.5 lb. bass on a Carolina rig.

The rest of us zeroed. I did get to try out my new rod and reel with the Daiwa TD SOL reel. It felt really great. I was just dying to break it in with a decent fish. Didn't happen this go round.

I've included a couple of pics with this report, one of the rod and reel setup, one a view from the south end of Castaic Lagoon looking north across the lake at Castaic Dam. And one of one of my trout swimbaits with the tail falling off.

I did hear that the Lagoon was going to be stocked with trout on Friday so when I went back for my usual Saturday session on 10/6 I took some of my rainbow goodies along as well.

I got up to the Lagoon at around 6:30 AM and noticed that the water level was way up from what it was on my last visit, I'd say about two feet. Threw the thermometer in the drink and started to fire away with my BBZ 1 slow sinker trout swimbait.

After about 20 minutes I stopped to check the water temp... couldn't believe what I saw..... it was all the way down to 62.
A six degree drop in a day and a half.... man that is huge.
Air temp was 59. (about three weeks ago one day the water was 87 and the air was 104, talk about fall transition.)

I did see a few trout swim by in close in front of me, they looked to be pretty good size for stockers. Also got a second pole going soaking PowerBait for the bows.

Took a break from the big swimmer and what bad luck for me, I noticed the tail had come loose..... well actually it was good luck that I noticed it cause it would have flown off and been lost for good on my next cast. It was just danglin there on a little thread of glue.

Ya know I don't mean to complain about BBZ quality but this is about the fifth time I've fished with this lure I couldn't have cast it out more than a hundred times and already the tail is falling off........ the lure only cost $40 plus tax.

You would figure it would last for a year at least or until some whopping fat mama bass tore it apart. Heck, I wouldn't mind at all if it got destroyed by a ten pounder as long as I landed the fish.

Switched over to a 1/8 oz. silver Kastmaster.... now this lure has been a real killer deal with the trout for me in the past. Today, no dice. No bites on the PowerBait soaking on pole two either.

The wind began to blow pretty good. Direction started out from the northwest but did a half swing around and was aslo coming from the southwest. Wave action kicked up making it difficult to stay in touch with the dropshots.

Not getting any action on the swimmers or the Kastmaster I decided to buckle down and stick with what I had come for, namely breaking in my new rig.

Went through a variety of my usual dropshot goodies with it. No love on the plastics either. At around 11:00 AM two guys I know came by to say hello... they were getting ready to take their Tracker 175 up to the upper Castaic for the rest of the afternoon. They split and I went back to the dropshots with the new rod and reel.

Took a few sidetrips with the Fat Boy Ika and the 5" Senko but had no luck with those either and continued on with my new rig and the dropshots.

At around 1:00 PM, who do I see floating by in front of me... my buddies who had gone up to the upper lake to fish. The wind was so strong up there they were not allowed to launch so they came back down to the Lagoon.

By this time I had been at it for around seven hours. But I was stone cold determined to at least get one bite on the dropshot. I had what you could call a severe case of last cast itis because I must have told myself that a hundred times and finally at around 6:30 PM when the sun went down I decided to pack it in.

I had fished it hard from sunup till sundown. Total zero, not even a nibble. Also (and it is no consolation for me) I did not see anyone else catch a single fish all day.

I'll be back at it again this week, maybe Thursday afternoon again. I'm not sure, but definitely on Saturday!!

Good fishing to you guys, later........ geobass
