Around Polk County

- Around Lakeland, speckled perch have been steady mornings and at night at Saddle Creek Park on minnows, reports Phillips Bait and Tackle, with numbers and size better than last week. Specks more active at Tenoroc with cool snap in lakes 3, 5 and Picnic, said Brian Fleming. Bass taking back seat, with bigger fish still inactive. But bass up to 23 inches at Tenoroc in lakes 3, Horseshoe and Fish Hook. Catfish at Tenoroc in lakes B, 5 and Derby, and at Saddle Creek around culverts.

- At Auburndale, speck fishing picked up considerably with much cooler weather over past week. A few limits coming out of lakes Haines, Rochelle, Alfred and Ariana, reports Ron Schelfo at Ron's Tackle Box in Lake Alfred. Anglers drifting or slow-trolling minnows and Ron's Zip jigs (white/chartreuse) over deep holes in all four lakes. And Lake Juliana and Lake Mattie should be picking up for specks. Lake Alfred best for bass, with anglers casting firetiger crankbaits - YoZuri Rattlin' Vibes and Bomber Model 7As - for fish 2-4 pounds.

At Winter Haven, chilly cold front all week improving speckled perch action on south chain with minnows or jigs. Lakes Eloise, Hartridge and Cannon yielding fair numbers of good-sized perch. Bass not getting much attention on south chain or small city lakes.

At Lake Hamilton, major improvement in speck fishing with perfect weather conditions. Some boats bringing in limits of specks 10-12 inches, others getting 15-20, on minnows at night and early mornings.

At Lake Marion near Haines City, night anglers loading up on speckled perch this week. Ray Chase at Bannon's Camp said action started on Monday, and boats bringing in near-limits every day. One boat had 60 up to 1 1/4 pounds drifting minnows from 6-10 p.m., said Chase. Specks in open water, hitting minnows as boats drift with breeze.

At Lake Pierce, specks just starting here, with single-digit catches, reports Jennings Camp. Bass fair, up to 2-4 pounds on wild shiners and junebug worms.

At Lake Hatchineha, speck anglers are out in force with some of best action around Central Florida for perch up to 13-14 inches. Gary Parramore at Chain O'Lakes Bait and Tackle said, "Hatchineha is probably the hottest lake around right now.'' Boats drifting north end around Johnson and Marion creeks with Hal Flys (white/chartreuse or blue/white) and minnows.

At Lake Toho, speckled perch turned on this week during day and at night, with 30-40 per trip for two anglers and half a dozen weighing up to 1 1/2 pounds, reports Mark Detweiler at Big Toho Marina. Open water around Marker 26 hot spot on minnows or jigs (blue/white Hal Flys), or Southern Pro Crappie Stringers tipped with minnows, said Detweiler. Bass also perking up with water temperatures falling into low 70s. Jason and John Cory of Oveido won Detweiler's Wednesday tournament series classic with five bass totaling 19 pounds, and fish up to 7 3/4 pounds, mostly in grass 2-4 feet deep on 10-inch junebug or red shad worms.

At Lake Kissimmee, specks have come on strong thanks to cool days, chilly nights and less wind early in the week. Anglers catching more good-sized specks. Limits not real common yet, but numbers solid. Popular spots North Cove, fishing minnows or jigs along hydrilla edges early, off south end of Bird Island, and at night slow-trolling Hal Flys or minnows around marker 8 near Grassy Island. A 9.70-pound bass caught in Florida BASS Federation State Championship Saturday and Sunday out of Camp Mack, but overall weights not impressive.

At Lake Walk-in-the-Water, change in weather brought much improvement in bass as well as speckled perch. Note that county ramp will be closed until Nov. 14 for repairs (call 863-499-2613).

At Crooked Lake at Babson Park, specks much better at night that during day, with 25-30 per boat on minnows over deep holes in 25-28 feet, reports Cindy Ritchison at Bob's Landing. Daytime anglers catching half as many. Bass mostly school-sized 12-16 inches on 10-inch junebug worms and Horny Toads.

At Frostproof, specks pretty consistent at night on minnows. Lavon Reynolds said he was out Tuesday night and caught 47. Size has been steadily picking up, with good numbers over 1 pound now. But no limits reported.

In the phosphate pits south of Mulberry and Bartow, bass picking up number-wise with water temperature dropping, but nothing over 6 pounds reported yet.
