MARTIN

Water conditions: Down 15 feet; high 60s; clear. Larry Colombo of Eufaula, Ala., says the bass fishing is as good as it's ever been right now. Despite the low water levels, anglers are catching 35 to 40 spotted bass per day fishing major points on the main lake. Most fishermen are using some type of small finesse rig like the Mann's Dragin' Worm. Color doesn't seem to matter that much. Just throw it out there, work it along the bottom and expect to get bit.

WALTER F. GEORGE

Water conditions: Down 4 1/2 feet; high 60s; clear. Bass fishing has been good around the shallower ledges with mid-range crankbaits and Carolina-rigged plastics. If water is being generated and the bass are feeding aggressively, the crankbait is the way to go. If the bass are lethargic, you can wait them out with the Carolina rig. The crappie are fattening themselves up for the winter, and trollers are reporting some excellent catches from the major creek channels and from the main river. Crappie have been suspended off the bottom in about 8-12 feet, making them harder to pinpoint. But many trollers are still having good success using two-hook rigs baited with live minnows.

WEST POINT

Water conditions: Down more than 13 feet; high 60s; mostly clear. Bass fishing has been excellent around shoreline structure with willow-leaf spinnerbaits. Some anglers are taking a slower approach, working jigs around the same shoreline structure. The recent cold front has slowed the bite some, but a few anglers are still reporting catches of 15 to 20 bass per day. A few bass in the 5- to 6-pound range have also been reported. Trollers are catching lots of crappie around brush piles and planted stake beds along the major creek channels. Most anglers are tipping their jigs with minnows to catch larger crappie. Lots of striped bass and hybrids are taking live shad around humps and road beds in 15-20 feet of water throughout the day.

HARDING

Water conditions: Full pool; high 60s; clear. Anglers are catching lots of small spotted bass around the boat docks shaky-head worms and Texas-rigged finesse worms. Crappie anglers are also having good luck around the docks with black/chartreuse jigs. Anglers are catching good numbers of crappie, and a few have reported catching fish in the 2-pound range.

SEMINOLE

Water conditions: A foot down; mid-60s; light stain in the Flint River, clear in the Chattahoochee and in Spring Creek. Bass fishing has been hit or miss due to the erratic weather. But crappie fishing just keeps getting better. Lots of crappie in the 1 1/2 to 2-pound range are taking white and chartreuse jigs around standing timber in 12-14 feet. Trollers are also catching lots of big crappie using live minnows at 6-9 feet in the major creek channels. Catfish ing is still excellent all over the lake with lots of big channel cats taking nightcrawlers, chicken livers and cut shad in 10-12 feet. Cats as larger as 15 pounds have been reported.

CALLAWAY GARDENS

Water conditions: Mountain Creek Lake is full, but most other lakes are significantly low; 62 degrees; clear. Columbus resident Greg Kirkman has been doing very well on Mountain Creek Lake, catching numerous bass in the 2- to 5-pound range on various crankbaits. Other anglers have reported good luck around the Discovery Center and near the spillway as schooling bass have been chasing shad . Longtime fly fishing guest Bill Taylor returned this week to fish with guide Kent Edmonds. They caught many large bluegill and a few nice bass on a wide variety of surface and subsurface fly patterns. One of their top flies was the "Stealth Bomber," a Kent Edmonds/Callaway Gardens original. Trout fishing will return to the private lakes at Callaway Gardens soon. The tentative date for stocking is Nov. 15th. This year's stocking will include a large number of trophy rainbow trout. The bulk of the fish will be in the 16-inch range.
