Fishing Report: Ross Barnett Reservoir

1. ABOVE HIGHWAY 43
Do yourself a favor, but better do it soon. If you don't fish north of Ratliff Ferry on the upper river area the rest of the year, go this week. The leaves are turning. The bass are biting. GO! Great reports continue to come in from bass fishermen who are catching unbelievable numbers of both largemouth and spotted bass in the upper river area. Shad have migrated up the river and are crowded in the pads on main and secondary points. Largemouth are chasing them in the pads, and spots are holding on points and in pockets feasting. The action is fantastic but don't expect monsters. Crappie fishing is also above average with a good run on black crappie reported.

2. UPPER MAIN LAKE
As long as the wind allows it, and boy was Tuesday perfect, crappie fishing is outstanding on the upper half of the main lake area. Crappie continue to hold on the edge of the river from the S-curve to Highway 43, but some are now being caught in some of the old sloughs and creek channels that run into the shallow flats on both sides. Shad migration, both up the river and in the sloughs and creeks toward backwaters, is the cause. Also great bass reports from the shallow flats and edges of the pad field. Shad have moved into those areas and so have the bass.

3. LOWER MAIN LAKE
There is an exception to everything and this week, the one area with consistently poor reports is the lower half of the main lake from the Twin Harbors and Three Prong Lake areas to the dam. It will get worse, too, since north winds are expected with an approaching front. Those winds will make the lower half tough to fish. About the only positive reports heard have been for bass in the coves and harbors, and on the riprap along Red Dot road and the Causeway to Pelahatchie Bay. In Main Harbor, you can try flipping the docks. It was good last year.

4. PELAHATCHIE BAY
Crappie, bass and catfish are all producing positive reports from the Pelahatchie Bay area. The creek channel as it winds through the open end of the Bay is producing the best crappie action. Cover a lot of water with a lot of jigs and minnows and stay on the channel edge. Bass fishing has been good in some backwater vegetation and also on the rocks along the Causeway. An 8.5-pound bass was caught Tuesday on a jerkbait midmorning on the rocks. Catfish have been biting good on the shallow stump flats.

5. THE SPILLWAY
No great catches reported, but the average report has improved despite the lack of water running through the dam. A canoeist reported a good run on schooling spotted bass between the dam and Highway 25 with the fish schooled on sand bar points. Catfishermen have done well on cut shad and night crawlers fished in the current on long casts from the rocks.
