South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Lots of big bass have been caught. The fish were biting plastic worms, stick worms and live shiners in the rim canal between Clewiston and South Bay and in the dynamite holes. Lipless crankbaits were working on the flats in front of East Wall and Coot Bay and in the Kissimmee River.

Greg Swinea said bass fishing out of Everglades Holiday Park has been tough, as water levels are high and the fish are small. Bass were biting stick worms, jerkbaits and creature baits in the canals and Gambler Cane Toads and Flapp'n Shads on the flats. Peacock bass were biting fast-moving Rapalas in the canals. Bass fishing at Sawgrass Recreation Park has been even tougher. Largemouth bass up to 8 pounds were biting Cane Toads and Flapp'n Shads on the flats at Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Good catches this week on the Lake Ida chain included Robert Scott and Al Romstein of Boston, 26 largemouth bass up to 6 pounds using Gambler Aces in Ida and the canals south of Ida; Pat and Pam Quinline of Rhode Island, 26 bass up to 5 pounds using Aces in Ida and north of Ida; and Al Francessco and Timmy Garcia of New Jersey, 29 bass up to 7.5 pounds Wednesday using Gambler Brutus swim baits and Aces in Ida and south of Ida. Tom Friedman and Kyle Stein of New Jersey caught 14 bass up to 8 pounds using Brutus swim baits and Aces in Lake Osborne.

Capt. Bob LeMay reported Whitewater Bay has some big snook and redfish in shallow areas, but they're spooky, so long, accurate casts are needed to get them to bite. Fishing in Whitewater was better for sea trout, ladyfish and jacks.

"We've had some sailfish activity this week," said Capt. Steve Souther of Fort Lauderdale charter boat Marlin My Darlin. "Most of the fish have been seen inside 200 feet all the way into the reef, occasionally even inside the reef, where they're chasing flying fish and ballyhoo. Most of the bites have come between 85, 90 feet and about 150 feet. Kingfishing is slow but steady. There's some fish around. They're doing pretty well between 100 and 200 feet off Dania Pier. We're also seeing some cero and Spanish mackerel on the reef and just inside the reef. Some of them are pretty good size. There's been some scattered dolphin around."

Tarpon were biting at night at Government Cut. Juno Beach Pier had lots of croakers all day Thursday plus a 30-pound cobia and a 49-inch cobia that wasn't weighed. Deerfield Beach Pier had kingfish and Spanish mackerel. Anglin's Pier had jacks and a few mackerel and bluefish. Dania Beach Pier had some mackerel, pompano and jacks.

Rain and sloppy seas have kept a lot of people from fishing, but Bud N' Mary's Marina in Islamorada reported decent fishing on the reefs for yellowtail snapper. Sailfishing has been hot and cold. It was red-hot Wednesday for Capt. Scott Stanczyk of Catch-22, whose charter released 11 sailfish. Mangrove snapper were biting in the cuts in the backcountry
