Trolling motor or push pole which do you use?

Post by bassin butch »

I love to fish in very thick stuff during the heat of summer. MY Minn Kota has plenty of power to move about. But I think some fish are spooked from the lawnmower effect of a motor cutting through the weeds. I'm thinking about buying or making a push pole to keep stealth. Do you use a push pole? Do you know if I can buy one that will fit nicely in a rod locker?
Thanks

Trolling motor or push pole which do you use?

Butch,
A push pole is always a good tool to have on board. I fish the Mississippi river a lot and am often faced with very sahllow or weed choked areas that the trolling motor is almost useless. The push pole will allow you to get much closer to the fish without spooking them and doesn't harm the vegetation. I use what's called a duck bill push pole. It has metal jaws that look similar to a post hole digger, it folds flat when closed and opens when needed. I believe Farm and Fleet stores carry these. A fiberglass or wooden pole can be inserted into the duck bill blades in either one or two pieces. I have used the duck bill to cross silted in creek mouths on the river where the outboard couldn't function and even too shallow for the troller. The push pole is great when you find yourself "high centered" on stumps also in very shallow water. When we fish the Mighty Miss. we talk inches of water, not feet and most anglers carry some type of push pole. It's a must have tool for tournamnet anglers. Hope you can locate one. Good luck, Johnnie Crain
