Much of the main lake has been muddy because of the wind and rain, but Val Osinski said he and Byron Childers caught bass using a lipless crankbait on flats in front of spawning areas. They also caught bass, including a 9.56-pounder that was the big fish in Sunday's Bass Busters tournament out of Clewiston, using Gambler Giggy Heads around rocks in 5-8 feet of water in the rim canal between Uncle Joe's and Moore Haven. Bass also were biting in the dynamite holes.

Capt. Jez Zampell, who fishes out of Everglades Holiday Park, said bass fishing has been tough because recent rains dirtied the water and the locks were open, which had the water moving in the main canals. He did guide Alex Redell to bass up to 4 pounds Wednesday using Zoom centipedes and soft-plastic jerkbaits along the banks of the finger canals along the west side of U.S. Highway 27. "We had to go back up in the fingers because the water was really muddy at the front," Zampell said. There were reports of cleaner water and a decent bass bite in the Miami Canal. Peacock bass were biting hard jerkbaits in the L-67A Canal.

Capt. Brian Sanders of Davie, who fishes out of Chokoloskee Island, reported good fishing around shallow wrecks in the Gulf, where his customers caught cobia, permit and pompano. Lots of sea trout were biting in the river mouths. Small snook and reds were biting inshore.

The best sailfish bite has been off Miami-Dade County. "Fish on the blue edge with live bait," said Capt. Bouncer Smith of Bouncer's Dusky 33, who has been kite-fishing with herring and pilchards. "We've been fishing from Fowey Light to Haulover Inlet and there's sailfish the whole way. Most of the sailfish have been in 120-180 feet and the dolphin were in 150-200 feet." Smith's charter Thursday landed six of 18 sailfish bites. His anglers Wednesday caught six sailfish, three 30-pound dolphin and two tarpon.

Tarpon have been scarce around Haulover Inlet, Government Cut, and the beach. Some keeper snook were biting at night at Boca Raton Inlet. Fishing remained slow at Juno Beach Pier. Anglin's Pier had quite a few Spanish mackerel, lots of jacks and a few bluefish, pompano and snapper. Dania Beach Pier had lots of pompano and mackerel, some blues and a few snook. Ballyhoo were abundant.

Bud N' Mary's Marina in Islamorada reported catches of cobia Wednesday but slow fishing for sailfish. Guides reported decent catches of mangrove snapper in the backcountry and a few bonefish on the flats. Spanish mackerel were biting in the Gulf. The Sea King of Islamorada reported catches of yellowtail snapper and a few keeper black grouper, along with a handful of mutton snapper and kingfish.
