In Northern Il. most of our lakes are private. Apperently years ago as development was underway no one thought about anglers and the positive economic benefits of stocking and revenue to a villiage. Most lakes have locked gates at the launches that you must a key to use it IE: property owners only. I was just curious if this is the same in other states or unique to my area? I fished in GA and every lake featured great access! WI does a fine job as well!

Butch,
Iowa has the same problem, there is so much concern over insurance that nearly all of our private sand pits are closed to the public, some great fishing gone to waste because others liked to have drunken parties and swim which resulted in drownings. Even part of the Mississippi river has been closed to anglers by a fence and locked gate, the power company must own the land right up to the levee. We still have access, but must walk several hundred yards to fish. We used to park only feet from some great walleye fishing, no more. Looks like the trend to eliminate angler access is increasing. I have fought it all I can, I've even been called by powerful companies and told to quit writting about accesses. Of course I won't quit. Johnnie.
