Where are my bass!

Post by BTwizy »

Higuys Im finding myself in a stump....The post spawn is over :0 Ive been watching this bass for 2 weeks and he has finally left the nest! Actually I cant find any bass at all. In the spring during the pre spawn and the spawn itself Ive really seen um shallow parallel to the shore swimming. Now all I see are bluegill. I was wondering if u guys had any info on post spawn activity...

Ive also heard that baits like the spinner are a mainly early spring late fall kinda bait. If this is true whats the summer baits! Im hoping the fish havnt retreated back to the middle as I have no boat(gettin 1 in a year!) and can only cast so far.
As usual I appreciate all help and advice Im givin.

Ive actually been in a stump for roughly the whole month of June Jeeze the spring went fast I cant wait for next year, having discoverd a jig late in the spring season next year will be lots of fun!

If you think a jig is fun what till next spring and go weightless senko. Those are the great. I have a pond that is 3 and a half acres and all the big bass seem to be around the middle. I am getting a few here and there with a spinner toss it out and let it fall on a semi slack line. Try throwin a craw with just a bullet weight. Maybe this will work, good luck to ya.

BT, have you tried a bluegill pattern shallow diving crankbait fished fast parallel to the banks? How about a red Rat-l-Trap, throw it out let it sink, then rip it off the bottom and let fall again. Repeat------
Spinnerbaits are effective all year, I like to use a gold bladed spinner bait with a salt and pepper skirt and buzz it across the surface, especially if theres a little wind. Have you tried a topwater bait? Torpedo-buzzbait-soft frog-Zara Spook? All of the above mentioned lures should work. Good luck, keep on chunkin'. Johnnie

Hi BTwizy,

If the bass just left the nest, then you are dealing with "Post-Spawn" conditions. If you are not seeing any bass shallow, then most likely the males are finished guarding their fry (baby bass) and the big females are recovering from the spawn. This is a difficult time of year for many anglers... In smaller ponds the females will move out to deeper water. You should be able to find some of these females tucked in heavy cover. The thing to keep in mind is that they are not aggressive and you will need to really slow down your presentation. The transition period does not last very long in ponds, so they should start getting more aggressive in a couple of weeks. Once the bass have had a chance to recover, you should get a great top-water bite going on. Those areas where you see the blue gill bedding will periodically be visited by larger bass that are looking to take advantage of these "sitting ducks". That's where Johnnie's tips should really shine.

Over the next two weeks, try working slow moving (smaller) lures near the first change in water depths near the bedding areas where you witness bass spawning.

Hang in there... it doesn't last forever. In ponds, I just focus on the heaviest cover I can find using a jig-n-pig (or trailer)and always manage to rustle up a few nice bass...

Good Luck!

BT, I hear ya. My last four outings have produced exactly one undersized bass. Since both of us are from the midwest there is one consolation, the wacked out weather. Around here the fish are a bit confused. Anglers are still catching bass, catfish and sunfish with egges, though the bass are small. Nobody can remember the spawn lasting this late in the season. I'm sure you have a go-to bait. Use it and fish when the bass are most active. early AM,PM, and night fishing. Good luck, Carl.

I found them, Go left at the blowdown and look for the sharpest drop. Then find the closest shallow structure to that point and camp out. They will be there. (Maybe)
