What Lures or Worms to use.........

during the day and night? In NY or more to the point Long Island. I'm having a hard time of it lately. I don't mind casting but a fish every now and then would be nice. Thanks

For this time of year on LI, if I had to fish a worm, I'd fish a larger 8-9" worm with a swimming tail. Something like a producto Ripple worm or a large culprit worm. Color would be natural with a lean towards the reds or oranges ( more Pumpkin than Melon). I'd swim it slowly texas style. You've only got a few more weeks before I would go away from the worm completely. This time of year, I like crank baits and fish imitating lures because the fish are fattening up for the winter. I've caught fish on cold fall days on everything from a crawl to a burning speed retrieve so try them all. You can cover more water with a crank and where you find one fish you will find more. If I find a thriving green weed bed I'll pull out a spinnerbait or an inline spinner like a mepps #3. Don't be afraid to troll this time of year either, drag a rapala or rebel around the first dropoff from shore. A couple more weeks and the tubes really come into their own, after that I'll leave it to Brendan and Nunz, the snow bunnies! JMHO

yep i agree with all of franks advice. but if i may add that i would also try a dropshot rig. its easier than fishing texas stye and it keeps your worm or softplastic in the basses strike zone longer and it gives those soon 2 be cold fish a little mor time 2 look at your menu before ordering.

I was out this weekend and let's just say it was very tuff. Water temps are down to 39 degrees, so at this point, the big stuff goes bye-bye and I break out the micro stuff. Basically I like using crappie and panfish sized lures. You'll catch other species for added fun, but you have a better chance of getting a bass with something tiny at this temp range. Because of the water clarity, fluorocarbon line is a must. I've been using 6 lb test fluoro, and crawling very small tubes and grubs 1" or 2" max. Also using the lightest weight possible 1/16 oz - 1/8 oz. It makes a big difference. Time to break out the ultralight setup... if you own one... otherwise you better put one on your Holiday gift list if you want to catch numbers this winter. There's still time before the lakes freeze over and who knows if they will stay frozen this year. The last three years, they only froze for a couple of weeks, which made for some great winter bassin'.

Brendan can you do me a favor and just write a book.haha. See right after summer is when I used to stop fishing. Now I can't get enough. If the water isn't frozen I want to be fishing. And I have no idea how to fish it. I learned more here then on any other website. THANKS

You guys are too much... All I can say is that I'm happy to share what I have learned and so are the other guys on the Prostaff. It's great to hear such good feedback, this website is a pain in the butt to keep up and running and when I hear good things from guys like you, it makes it all seem worth while. After all, that's the reason why this site was created in the first place... to help out fellow anglers.

Keep the questions coming and we'll all do our best to try and help answer them.
