Crazy Jim, There are a few basic lures that I'm sure all of the pro staff would recommend and of course, a few that work here and there. I always use a deep diving crankbait, a 3/8th ounce spinnerbait, 6 to 8 inch plastic worms, tubes, 1/4 ounce bass jigs, buzz baits and in-line spinners. I let the water color dictate the bait color, usually something I can see about three feet down. Please remember this, "it's not the wand that pulls the rabbit out of the hat, it's the skill of the magician". Get a few basic lures and master them, then you can be more selective. Good luck and welcome aboard. Johnnie

As always Johnnie and I are thinking a lot alike. His selection is "spot on".
Since you are just starting you may want to consider a few Beetle Spins as well. These have been around for several years, but they still catch fish, even if you don't hear about them doing anything on the big tournament circuits. They will catch a variety of sizes in bass, and at this point you are needing to learn every aspect of the sport, while building confidence - this lure will help in that direction.
Best of fishing,
Dan
