Well I want to say welcome to this site, you will love it! Im going to answer the questions to the best of my ability as will everyone else. There are Bass in New Jersey first of all. You can fish for Bass without a boat, I had been before i finally got a boat. you just need to find out a little bit about the bass habits in the area you will be fishing, as well as the water, try to find some information about the water like depth, structure in the water, and types of fish in your water. About the Fin-Nor reel, I think that is a saltwater reel, i dont really know if it is the right thing to be using in freshwater lakes in NJ. You should probably pick up a new rod/reel. Any of the pros on this site add in and help me help this guy out.
Thanks

njangler,
I too welcome you to the site. Cole is right, you will need to change tackle for bass fishing. You may start with an inexpensive, but quality, bait cast rod and reel. I like a six foot, med. heavy casting rod with flippin' handle. The reel should be medium to high speed and a name brand. It may take time to master the bait casting rig, but you'll do it. A good spinning rod and reel will also work fine, especially when bank fishing. Again, a 6' rod and a quality spinning reel. I don't like to deal in name brands, because I have sponsors and I don't want people to think I'm pushing one product over another. There are a lot of good combinations out there. You will neeed a couple of bass spinnerbaits, a few shallow to deep crankbaits, some soft plastics, and a jig and pig to consistently catch bass. When bank fishing look for cover along the bank or about a cast away from the shore. Look for rock, rip rap, culverts, feeder creeks, fallen trees, stumps and don't overlook boat ramps. Not only are boat ramps excellent fishing at times, you can meet a lot of people there that just might share some information with you, if you ask nicely. Good luck and keep in touch, Johnnie
