Soft Plastics Ban!

Jenn let me know about this and we should all be aware of it. Attacks on fishing happen all the time. Loss of access, limits on lead. Once things are banned there is little chance of getting them back. Here is the link to the story and below that is a message from the director of Keep America Fishing. Pay heed my friends. It only takes a few minutes to write a letter and $.50 to mail it!

This is the letter from Robertson.

Dear Fellow Anglers,
During the last few weeks we at KeepAmericaFishing™ sent out emails regarding a bill in Maine that would ban the use of all soft baits. This legislation is now going to a working session of the Maine Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. In order to show just how many anglers across the country are concerned by this bill we ask that you sign our petition in a show of solidarity. This petition will be presented to the Committee so that they can see that banning soft baits not only affects their own residents and anglers but also anglers nationwide.
By signing the petition you are telling the Committee that you "do not approve of unfounded bans on soft baits. Arbitrarily banning widely used tackle such as this would have a tremendous impact on everyone from individual anglers to tackle manufacturers to state wildlife management agencies that protect our resources. Further study must be conducted and decisions must be based on sound science."
Join us on this issue. Whether Maine is far from you - or near - what happens there could happen in your state as well. Sign the petition today.
Here's to tightlines,

Gordon Robertson

You're welcome. It's an interesting read... and it worries me that there is no real science to back up what they claim.

Here's the link to the Bassmaster.com's article: http://www.bassmaster.com/news/soft-plastics-banned

And as far as I can see, there hasn't been any report on the hearings that should have happened on February 5th.

There is also a short blog post on Field and Stream's The Honest Angler:

I finally found a bit on the hearing...

"Maine's Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife held a public hearing on this bill, where they determined to advance this legislation, as well as one to mandate biodegradable hooks, to a work session for further discussion and possible modification of the bill. At the end of the work session the bill could be recommended for passage, recommended to not pass, pass with modification or a study committee could be formed to further investigate the need for the bill.

At the hearing three individuals spoke in favor of the bill and the remaining speakers, for almost three hours, spoke against the bill. Notably the individual who requested the bill be introduced said the bill was not drafted to his satisfaction and that his intention was to basically ban any lure that had rubber or plastic on it that wasn’t biodegradable – and this included spinners."

Here's the article I pulled that from: http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/news ... 79855.aspx

After some searching, I finally found a good recounting of what happened at the February 5th hearing on this.... And a bit on what comes next.
