Luke, an idea I have used in the past is to purchase a basic swimming pool thermometer and tie a length of cord to it, you can toss it out in the water and let it sit for a few minutes and pull it in and check. You can get one at any store that carries pool supplies for a couple of bucks and you are not out much if you lose it or break it, the plus is they are pretty durable.

Luke, any waterproof thermometer will work, like Bryan said. Try to avoid ones with a lot of glass. One where the mercury tube is a little protected.
I have caught a 5 1/2 pound bass from a small lake-one only-used a small Rooster Tail-in line spinner, great baits for cold water.
